All the stuff I've been reading on carbs and DM have been about percentages. I am keeping Martha's percentages down really low and want to keep it that way. But how do we figure grams? For example, I had to use new baby food today to get some medicine down. It says Carbs 2 gm. How do I convert that to percentage? Where do I find the grams listing on label information? Thanks!

Do you know how many grams a cat should have each day?
How many grams would equal, say, 5%?

It is not that simple. The calories a cats needs can vary but is usually between 20 and 30 cal/lb of cat weight per day. The calories of fat. protein and carbs varies.
Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories

I'm trying to make decisions about how many carbs a food might contain. The label says only 2 grams. I need to get the percentage.

How many calories in one can of food? It depends on the total calories in the can (so basically is it a small or big can?)

For example if the food is a small can with 100 calories like FF classics and (by Larry's calculations) that can has 2 grams (8 calories) of carbs, you could say that 8/100 calories are from carbs, or 8%.

Now if it is a large can of a high calorie food like Wellness, it would be less. A large can of Wellness Turkey has 495 calories, so if 8 of those calories were carbs, then it would only be 1.6% carbs roughly.

It's a matter of how "diluted" the carb calories are in the food's overall calories.

As I said earlier, it is baby food. A jar of baby food that does not list calories, it only says 2 gm carbs.

Can you please tell me a bit more? What is the brand? What is the flavor? What about ingredients? I am going to assume it is medium carb (maybe 10-15%) because baby food jars tend to be small and not super high in calories...

Try going to the website for the baby food. There is often much more info there. Look for a "Nutritional Info" tab or button. For instance:
For Gerber Chicken & Chicken Gravy:
  • 100kcal for 2.5oz (70.87 grams) and 2g carbs.
So 2g x (4kcal/g)=8kcal from carbs per jar.
One jar has 100kcal, so 8kcal from carbs/100kcal
    Divide 8 by 100= .08 multiply by 100 (to get percent)= 8%.

For Turkey & Turkey Gravy:
  • 80kcal for 2.5oz (70.87 grams) and 3g carbs.
So 3g x (4kcal/g)=12kcal from carbs per jar.
One jar has 80kcal, so 12kcal from carbs/80kcal
    Divide 12 by 80 = .15 multiply by 100 (to get percent) = 15%

I don't know anything about carb grams, only food amount grams. Blackie gets 154 grams of food each day, and is getting 214 calories total to keep her weight stable, or close to being stable as possible.

Thanks, Ann and Tess. That was just what I was looking for. It looks like the chicken baby food is okay but better back off the turkey.

So is Gerbers the particular brand you have been using?

Because the various nutritional constituents will obviously vary between one brand and another, probably quite a lot.
