Hi everyone,

I'm about to update my list for wet food available in Australia for carbohydrate and phosphorous content. I've seen some websites that list the carb content as "as fed", or "dry matter", or "carbs as % of calories". I have always used "as fed" as that's what I was taught, just checking it is still the right way to do it before I send emails off to all the companies.

Thanks!

Hi there,
the easiest to understand ,IMHO, is the Metabolized Energy (ME) per 100 Kcal - the one that gives you a breakdown on Prot/Fat/Carbs per 100 Kcal, like in Dr. Pierson's chart.

Well this doesn't help me :p I can see the pros & cons of each method, but now I'm super-confused! I might ask in the Facebook group as well incase there are other opinions there. Thanks guys!

Hi @Tara & Ivana,
There are different ways of determining carb content. FDMB and Dr Pierson both use the 'percentage of calories from carbs'. This can be calculated using either wet or dry percentages (water makes no difference as it has no calories).

Hi Tara, sorry I can't help out with which analysis method is best, the whole thing fry's my brain! I'm curious though what you're feeding Ivana at the moment with her CKD. I'm playing around with Ruby's food (based on vet's advice) to now focus on the CKD but she's showing signs of increased glucose with the increased carbs. Are you giving Ivana Phos binders or anything to counter the slightly higher phos (above 0.1%) levels that are inevitable with a non-prescription renal diet? Would just be interested to know how you're navigating this balancing act with what foods we've got here in Australia.
Thanks
Fiona

Ok I've decided to go with % calories from carbs, to make it the same as Dr Peirson's list which a lot of the US members use. Will take me a while to get it all updated but will post here when it's ready.

We are feeding Ivana both low carb and low phos food. It's a limited list, but she's doing fine with it. Let me know if you want the exact brand and flavours that she has and I'll make a list for you. She was diagnosed with the CKD in Jan 16, and was still on insulin at that time, though she's now been in remission for almost 2yrs. Her CKD is going good, although she is due for more bloodwork at the vet tomorrow so we shall see! No binder as her phos level is not high enough to need it at this stage. Also no fluids yet as she's still drinking enough, though I suspect that time will be coming in the near future.

Thanks for getting back to me Tara, how did you go with Ivana's blood tests? All okay I hope. Yes I'd be interested in knowing what brands/flavours you're feeding, I've been feeding Ruby Weruva Chicken Frickazee, pretty low phos and lower sodium than La Isla Bonita even though this one is slightly lower phos. If you're in the position to move to a renal diet, would you be interested in taking this conversation off the thread? I'm currently mixing Weruva with Hill's but washing off the gravy because her BG were starting to spike. Not exactly ideal.
