Hi All. I am going a little crazy with the carb content of different varieties of Fancy Feast. I have been to Petsmart 3 times since Bubbles' diagnosis, 3 days ago. Does anyone know the carb content of Fancy Feast Elegant Medley Yellowfin Tuna Tuscany? the site I just checked said 7%. Does that sound correct?I have Fancy Feast Classic Salmon and Shrimp Feast...and I carb % listed as 1%? Bubbles has been on dry food for the past 15 years. I wanted to gradually transition from the Friskies Indoor Cat Dry to a low carb Fancy Feast Classic.

Thanks Wendy, I just found my info on that site. It seems the Friskies Dry is 37%, and 22% for the Medley and 5% for the Classic. I am on the right road, I hope. WHEW! I can tell by my Bubbles behavior that her BG is coming down. Yay!

Save a few cans of the FF Tuscany for when you might need them. Since it's a high carb food, it's good to have a few of those kinds of food around just in case your kitty drops too low and needs the extra carbs to bring her back up.

Keep them someplace separate from your low carb foods.

Are you home testing the glucose? The level may drop 100 mg/dL and drastically change insulin needs when you switch to lower carb food.

Yes, I will keep some high carb foods (10 lbs of Friskies Dry still in the closet...probably helped give her diabetes...ugh). I am gradually switching her carbs from 37% down to 5-10%, watching signs and symptoms, monitoring water intake and output. The BG testing will wait til later this week. She is still drinking and peeing volumes, so I know her BG is still up there. Thanks for all your help and support!

go ahead and donate the dry to a shelter when you're done transitioning or if it's not open, take it back for a refund/store credit. We don't like to use dry to bring their numbers up (in case of a hypo) because it takes too long to get into the system to raise the BG and then stays too long. I'd say "give it to a friend", but now that you know how bad dry really is, I doubt if you'd want to do that ;-)
If you do decide to keep it, you should seal it well and freeze it. Dry can go rancid after awhile

If we get a number under 50 when we test, we only use the HC wet gravy foods, or a couple of drops of honey, Karo or syrup because it brings them back up quickly without continuing to keep them up for days

Yes, the Friskies Dry is going to the shelter where I found my other best friend (Augie Doggie). And I have tubed cake icing (the kind you write with) for hypoglycemia. It's even easier to use than syrups. Works great on kids, and I'm hoping Bubbles won't need it any time soon.

Thanks, arlene :-D
