Mara and Mitzi

Member Since 2014
Mitzi's AMPS just read 250 and gave her 5 units of Lantus. Not concerned about that as she's been on Baytril for a week or so and it raises her numbers. My SS is not updated but her numbers have been in the 100s and 200s, occasionally higher but not often. Just trying to give anyone background info so they have as much as possible in case you don't know much about Mitzi as I post more on Facebook than on here, which I know should be vice versa. Anyways, Mitzi has CRF, a heart murmur, diabetes (obviously), anemia, etc. She hasn't eaten on her own in over a month...I've been force feeding her with a syringe because she doesn't mind it. The past couple weeks she has been peeing in her sleep or on the floor by my bed. Literally doesn't go in the potty box unless I put her in there, which I do whenever I'm home. I've been noticing the last few days that her mouth has a foul, and I mean FOUL smell coming from it so last night I investigated only to find a HORRIBLE molar on the right side/back side of her mouth. It is BADLY infected, bloody, swollen and red and obviously causing problems. However, Mitzi will be 17 this next week and clearly can't be put under due to her age or problems. I'm super concerned on what to do and what can be done. I haven't slept all night because her breathing is off and I'm so scared something will happen if I sleep. It doesn't sound like it's coming from her lungs from the fluids I give her, THANK GOD, but it sounds more like she has shi*/slime/crap/drainage in her mouth that she can't swallow and is causing her nasal problems as well. Another thing, I noticed last night that Mitzi was kind of wobbly. She went to lay by her water to get a drink and literally laid on top of her right back leg. I lifted her booty and pulled the leg out and she didn't even seem to notice. I then tried standing her up and she was having a hard time so I put her in bed with me, where I've been keeping her ever since. This morning she was still in bed with me and I put her in the potty box, which she absolutely hated...she couldn't even stand up in there so I held her butt and she went pee just fine. I took her out and she walked maybe a few steps and fell over on her right side because her right back leg gave out on her. Tried standing her up and she couldn't do it. She's now not leaving bed with me unless I have to take her potty. In fact, I haven't cared in weeks and have been putting towels under her butt so she can pee on them and stay in bed all day if she wants to. I have a bed protector sheet so my bed can't be ruined so I just do laundry multiple times a day. I don't know why Mitzi wont use the potty box as she has literally NEVER went outside of it in her whole life so I'm getting new bloodwork done today along with them checking to see if she has a uti, kidney infection or whatever the problem may be. I just have a feeling this tooth thing is causing issues. Last night she was pawing at me to stop looking and it broke my heart cos I know it must be really painful and hurt her. I don't know what to do. She seems so different the last few days. I got her in as soon as I possibly could today with a different vet because I don't wanna wait till tomorrow to see mine so she will be going asap but I"m worried, freaking out and can't stop crying. I just don't know what to do because I can't lost my baby. I literally can't. Does anyone have any advice or experience with any of this?! There's no way her kidneys have gone down hill so much to cause all this as I have numerous kitty friends on Facebook who's cats have MUCH WORSE kidney values than Mitzi's and are doing just fine. I'm concerned about neuropathy in her back leg but why would it happen now if her numbers have been so much better than they used to be?! Her diabetes wasn't controlled for quite some time but it has been steady for a couple months now. UGH I'm just so worried and scared. Should I be?! Should I not be?! She is limp like a noodle and can't stand up, let alone eat on her own. I'm fine with force feeding her cos then I know how much food she's getting in her system but I'm not fine with her not being able to stand up and the fact that she won't go potty in the potty box. She's just laying her with a plugged up nose, or so it sounds that way.

Just watched a video on Youtube with a cat that has neuropathy and I'm positive Mitzi has it. It's exactly how she's recently been walking and everything. BUT WHY NOW?!

Aww, I wish I knew all the answers to your questions .. Unfortunately, the best I can do is give you some hugs .. (((hugs))) Hopefully someone else around here can help you figure things out!

Oh, Mara, I bet you are so scared! I am glad that you are getting Mitzi into the vet as soon as possible. I would make that the first step. Could be neuropathy in her legs. Spot had it, but he didn't seem to have any walking issues, except he walked on his hocks. I will say some prayers for you and your baby and am also including a big old hug too.

Thank you Deb and Spot! I'm pretty positive it's neuropathy in her back legs cos she's been sitting on her hocks, walking like a drunk and now her right leg has given out on her.

Mara,
it sounds like you are really in between a rock and harder place. Sending hugs...
I would be feeling the same as you. We all want as much time as we can have.

But I can add that if she has a really bad tooth, and infection in her mouth.... you will be facing choosing to do surgery and take a chance that she has
more time with you verses continuing to feel worse.
If the tooth is that bad, antibiotics aren't going to fix it.
I will pray for your vet to have wisdom to help improve her situation.
Another hug!

Rhiannon

you're going to the vet today, right? Do it today, ASAP. It could be neuropathy, but if this came on suddenly then it could also be something much more serious (and coupled with the breathing problems I would be very concerned). I wouldn't even try to guess without the vet seeing her because there are too many possibilities. They may need to put her on oxygen and do some x-rays.

Hi Mara

I'm glad you're getting her into the vet. It was only about 2 months ago when she was running like a youngster, and neuropathy USUALLY doesn't come on that quickly. I haven't had time to go back over all your posts here (and without keeping her spreadsheet up to date, it's a total guess on any of our parts) but I also have to wonder if she's really under better control. I have my doubts.

She had been running in the 500-600's for a very long time, was started out on a really high dose and increased too quickly, so I'd think her numbers would be pretty wonky. How often are you testing now to get those 100's and 200's?

If that tooth is that bad (and it does sound awful!!), you may have to make a tough decision. It sounds like it really needs to go! I totally understand your reluctance to put her under anesthesia, but her quality of life has got to be pretty bad if she's got an abcessed tooth. If you've ever had a badly infected tooth, you know how horribly painful they are. Yes, it can be risky to have the dental, but as much as you love her, you don't want her suffering for whatever time she has left either.

If you have those tests from the past 6 weeks, it would help if you could update your spreadsheet, but I know right now your concern is Mitzi. I hope the vet visit yields you some answers.

Sending lots of good vetty vines and tons of virtual {{{Hugs}}}

Low potassium is common in cats with CKD and presents the same as neuropathy but it can also affect the heart and it's ability to work properly. The smell in her mouth could be the tooth but it could also be uremia from advanced CKD.

I have no idea if that is what is occurring but CKD can be stable for a while and then go into a crisis mode and with the symptoms you are describing, that could possibly be the problem. You can't compare blood tests from one cat to another.

I would get Mitzi to the vet immediately. I am more worried about crashing due to CKD than the tooth because the tooth won't cause the peeing outside the box, the Wobblies, the breathing, etc. be sure they check her blood pressure as well.

And Mara....I hate to say this to you but it could be time. Just be strong for her and listen to what the vet says. It's very very hard to get enough calories into a kitty by assist feeding unless you are doing it every couple of hours. Sometimes if they are crashing due to CKD, a couple of days in the clinic can help...sometimes not.

Please update us.

Sending more hugs, prayers and healing vines to you and Mitzi. I agree with the others - getting her to the vet as soon as possible is the most important thing you can do. You have a tough day ahead of you, and I wish we could make it easier for you. Just try to remember to keep her comfort, her feelings in mind as you make any decisions. I know you love her too much to let her suffer because you can't bear to be without her. I've been there, and it's so hard, but you'll hate yourself later if you don't make the best choice for her. You have us all thinking of you and praying for you. Be strong! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Sending hugs and healing vines. I hope the vet has some good news for you. You know you will do whatever is best for Mitzi

Dear Mara and Mitzi, my heart breaks for the pain and suffering both you and Mitzi are going through. I'm saying a prayer for you both and I truly hope that the vet is able to help you.

One thing I noted was the very bad breath Mitzi had and I can relate to that. About two weeks before Pixie was diagnosed, his breath was so foul that I actually commented on it to my kids. I told them, "Pixie's breath is so foul it would gag a maggot". Now, I should have brought him sooner to the vet but we were in the middle of helping my son and his wife move all their furniture home so they could move to Australia. By the time I took Pixie in, he was diabetic and the vet said he needed dental work. Well, needless to say, they haven't done dental because his diabetes has never been controlled until this last week when I joined FDMB. My point to all this is that Pixie's bad breath never went away until we finally started treating him for Pancreatitis. Whenever he gets a severe flare-up that's the first thing I notice - bad breath. I just thought I'd share that in case it might be something to consider. Pancreatitis can sure give very high BG numbers.

Hugs, kisses, prayers and well wishes to both of you. You've moved me to tears this afternoon. Sincerely, Anne.

Mara, I've been thinking about you and Mitzi since I read this this morning. I hope your vet can figure out what is wrong so you can make the right choice for your girl. Lots of prayers, healing vines, good thoughts - whatever works - headed your way.

I too am just catching up on your baby and sending tons of prayers that you can find out what's going on and make the right decision for Mitzi, what ever that may be. I can tell in your words how much you love your her . :YMHUG:
