Normal weight, 10-yr-old spay was diagnosed 5 months ago. We've been through Vetsulin, HumulinN and Lantus. I can give her 1/2 a unit 2ce a day or 8 units 2ce a day... her blood sugar readings stay between 500 and 400. I've done curves every 1/2 hr for 8hrs. She eats Welllness Signature Selects. She's has a full battery of blood tests and nothing seems to be wrong. My vet and I need help. Any ideas?

1) Food - is the Wellness Selects on the food list at Cat Info? j\Just being canned doesn't make it low carbohydrate. The Wellness turkey and giblets, for example, is 4% calories from carbohydrates.

2) Can we get you to post some numbers you've gotten in terms of how long since the shot?
- Like this:
AMPS = AM pre-shot test
+2 = any test taken 2 hours after the shot
+5 = any test taken 5 hours after the shot
+# = any test taken # hours after the shot
PMPS = PM pre-shot test

3) It is possible your cat has a high dose condition such as acromegaly, insulin auto antibodies, or Cushings

4) Can we get you started using our grid to record your glucose tests? It will help us give you better feedback. Instructions are here.

Understanding the spreadsheet/grid:

The colored headings at the top are the ranges of glucose values. They are color-coded to clue you in as to meaning.

Each day is 1 row. Each column stores different data for the day.

From left to right, you enter
the Date in the first column
the AMPS (morning pre-shot test) in the 2nd column
the Units given (turquoise column)

Then, there are 11 columns labeled +1 through +11
If you test at +5 (5 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +5 column
If you test at +7 (7 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +7 column
and so on.

Halfway across the page is the column for PMPS (evening pre-shot)
To the right is another turquoise column for Units given at the evening shot.

There is second set of columns labeled +1 through +11
If you snag a before bed test at +3, you enter the test number in the +3 column.

We separate day and night numbers like that because many cats go lower at night.

It is merely a grid for storing the info; no math required.

5) We use candles and rainbows to indicate a cat is deceased. We use 911 when the cat is in imminent danger of death (seizing, ketones, comatose). If you go back to your first post and click edit, you can change the icon to something else, like a question mark.

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear that you're struggling with the numbers. May I ask your name and your cat's name? My name is Shelly, and my cat's name is Jersey. A few questions/comments:

Food: People here do recommend feeding low-carb foods - foods that are less than 10% carbs. BJ provided a link to a food chart that most of us rely on here. Look at the third column in the chart; that tells you the % of carbs in a variety of foods. I didn't see Signature Selects listed on the chart, so I'm not sure if it's low-carb or not. If you do make a food switch, make sure you monitor closely. If you switch from a high-carb food (assuming Signature Selects is high-carb) to a lower-carb food, the amount of insulin needed may decrease quickly.

Testing: If you could get the spreadsheet that BJ mentioned up and running, that would help us understand better what's going on with your kitty. Are you using a human meter to test or a pet-specific meter? Are you testing every day before each shot and in between each shot, too? Whatever numbers you can give us, the more we can help you figure out what's going on.

Insulin: Are you still using Lantus right now? How much are you currently giving your kitty? (Lantus is a much better insulin for cats than Vetsulin and Humulin are.)

I know I'm asking a ton of questions. Please don't let it overwhelm you. I just want to make sure we have all the bases covered.

As BJ mentioned, some cats do have high-dose conditions. Don't let that scare you. Several members on the board have had kitties with those conditions, and they'll be able to give you great advice if it turns out that your kitty also has a high-dose condition.

Hang in there!
Shelly

Also, have you taken your cat in recently to the vet to check for any dental issues or infections? Both of these could keep the BG levels high.
