Can't get out of the 300's!

I'm so frustrated! Acro IAA Baby is at 12.5u and just can't get out of the 300's! :banghead: She's had a few 200's and only 2 100's. Am I doing something wrong? I read another post where I think (@Olive & Paula?) mentioned for her acro she does 4 cycles, 4 cycles, 6 cycles? Do I need to do that also? At this point I'd be happy to see her consistently in the yellows. The good news is she seems fine/happy/no obvious symptoms, just one day she was kind of "down" and that's when her ketones were a little raised.

Oh wise ones...what to do, what to do?

Thanks!

You aren’t doing anything wrong. You are fighting the antibodies and tumour growth. Just keep plugging along and you WILL get there. And be frustrated along the way. Ages ago we had someone post, be the tank, the tank always gets where it’s going. It’s true.

Since you are seeing yellow, I wouldn’t shorten the time between increases. However, since Baby is now over 10 units total, you can move to 1.0 unit increases instead of 0.5 unit changes.

And please try to get a second test after PMPS, for each and every night time cycle. Even a +2 or +3 will give valuable data. You could be missing lows at night which are causing bouncing during the day. That is very common with diabetic cats. If you have to go to bed early, even a +10 in the morning could help fill in that missing picture.

OK, I will get her back to a solid 13 tomorrow morning (easier to measure), and 1u increases after that.

Hi Wendy, forgive me - my head is spinning from reading SO MUCH lately, but which document says to increase 1.0 units over 10? I cannot find one...is that per Roomp and Rand? Thanks o_O

We don't have a document per say. But rather these are practises we do for higher dose cats. Roomp and Rand were dealing with lower dose cats. Think of the increases as a % of the total dose. A 0.5 unit increase is a 10% increase at 5 units, but only 2.5% at 10 units. Experience here has shown that 10-15% increases help to get over the insulin resistance you are seeing with both IAA and acromegaly in the picture. You might slow down a little when you start seeing green on the spreadsheet.

Gotcha, thanks! Makes sense!

How well I member the sinking feeling when, in spite of increase after increase, after increase...after increase... BKs ss was a sea of pink...
We didn't see green for 6 months, until we got to a dose of 9u Lantus and a bolus of 3u R. The green lasted 3 hours. He then bounced to the stratosphere. Three days later he was back to a sea of pink. It was another 6 weeks before we saw green again, at a dose of 12.5u Lantus along with anywhere from 3-5u R.
Jojo was one of the 'gurus' back on our day - and she coined the phrase Wendy mentioned "Be the tank -a tank always gets to where its going"

Hang in there and hang in here

First off, you are doing a great job researching, reading, and doing everything you can for Baby. My boy was Acro/IAA as well and went down a similar route as you. It felt like forever for his numbers to come down after many, many dose increases. Look at the bigger picture and the longer term, you will get there, but it is a methodical dance to make sure you find the right amount for Baby. Being a test-o-holic was good for my boy. His SS might help see how another Acro/IAA cat's numbers changed over time. With both conditions the numbers can change from cycle to cycle. There were many partial or even skipped doses when something in his body decided to work.

Wendy and Sandy were a HUGE help in being there to calmly answer questions I am sure they heard many times before. Without them and the community here I would have been a wreck and my boy thanks this group everyday for the support and knowledge this group gave.

No one climbed a mountain with just one step. The hike might be long, but it will be so rewarding when you see more of those pretty colors on the SS.
