canned pumpkin for loose stools?

I just made a change to Kyndra's diet. Not major, just a little more consistency. Same food just for a few days in a row. Now she has diarrhea, not runny, just soft stools and frequent (stinking the place up!). She howled a little tonight so I think her tummy is upset. Her #'s are normal (for her) so I think it is just the food. I think it is from me now being consistent in her diet. (there is a thread about it here viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58609)

I have canned pumpkin and sort of recall that a teaspoon or so of that can help...? It is just plain pumpkin, not filling with spices and stuff. it's even organic :)

I am hoping it is just the food since it is a holiday weekend! Maybe for now I will go back to a little variety, I just made the change in the last few days. She is getting Before Grain Beef (96%)

thanks!

I don't know about the pumpkin.
I do know I had Baxter on Before Grain Beef for a little less than a month. His stomach made gurgurling noises & I noticed his nose was runny. I started to think he might be allergic to it. I did a little research & found that 80% of cats are allergic to beef. I swtiched back to Blue Buffalo WIlderness.

that's interesting about the beef allergies! She has had it before, just not everyday and she has had FF beef classic for days in a row before w/o problem, though FF is not quite the same as it has more "stuff" in it. My plan was to do 2 days beef, one day turkey, one day tuna to try for some consistency in her bg#'s.

I think the Blue Buffalo is much more pricey around here than even the BG, which I can get by the case at a discount. I'm on a severe budget (out of work)/ Picking up the turkey and tuna tomorrow so I'll stay away from the beef altogether for a bit and see.

According to the charts, the BBW brand seems to have a really high fat to protein ratio. Kyndra has a weight problem so I deal with that, too :-/ Btw, do you only feed Salmon? I was just asking about that in my other thread - that regular diet of fish was bad for cats with diabetes due to high in phosphorus and they should only get it a couple times a week or as treat? confused_cat

Before Baxter was DX I was feeding him Salmon everyday. Looking back how stupid could I be? Now I hardly feed Salmon. Baxter lost weight while I was feeding him B4 Grain beef. So I switched quickly back to Wilderness because thats all I know right now. With Christmas this week I didn't want to switch to something I never feed before. Plus, my vet has been out of town for over a week. I didn't want have anymore problems due to food. I currently have Baxter off of insulin so I really scared to play around with different foods. I have been researching new opitions. I would love to stay grain free & the opitions are slim.

Hi Jenn,

So it looks like this is new to you as of Nov? Kyndra was dx in Sept 2009 and was controlled with food (expensive Purina DM which I cannot afford now - and learned I didn't have to) until following March. Then she had an attack of pancreatitis, and my vet put her on insulin. I'd began to research and I found this place a couple months before. I revisit here often, sometimes for advice, sometimes for reassurance!

The whole food thing can be really overwhelming, but I have to say in just the couple years since Kyndra was dx there have been several new foods available. They are more pricey but if you can buy them by the case (once you settle into brands/flavors) you can save $$ and be sure to check out the Supply Closet here for folks who post coupons you can link to and/or print. My local Agway sells me the BG at a discount and they are the cheapest place around (and I live in a tax free state :)! I was so relieved to find out I could buy Fancy Feast, too (tho' I always turned my nose up to it thinking it was snooty food!). I have made up my own chart that I keep on my fridge. it has all the numbers and even cost per ounce! I buy my FF at Target on sale and sometimes w/coupons and it average 16 cents an ounce! I have 2 cats and went from completely dry food to wet so it was a BIG financial jump. If I could have them both on the best all the time I would, but Lita gets the FF and Kyndra got a mix of that and the grain free. I live for the day she can be off the insulin but not sure that will happen.

So, I hear you on your concerns about not making any changes right now. It can be a delicate balance especially when you are just adjusting to your "new life." I still sweat Kyndra's numbers at times (like lately) and I have to take her whole picture into consideration and that's when I come here :)

Sorry for the long post and I am sure you've heard much when you first came on board, but even tho' it was 2 years ago that I first got the news (lots of water intake, thought I'd come home with a Tapazole script for thyroid - not diabetes!) it often feels like it was just last month!

Best!
B, K & L too!
