We have a cat that not only has diabetes but also food allergies. We have used Fancy Feast which I think has been recommended on this website but our cat has also broken out. Is there a kind of canned food that is both good for diabetic cats and gluten free. If we find some that are gluten free, what ingredients do we need to look for to make sure that the food is also good for diabetic cats? Do cat foods have sugar in them? Thanks for any advice in this situation.

Regards

What makes you suspect the gluten?

There are many instances where a cat is allergic to the protein.... such as fish or chicken.
You can test the theory by switching to a novel protein to see if you get the same reaction.... for example, duck or rabbit.

I just saw a brand yesterday that had limited ingredients....
but it is a medium carb.... they are all higher than 10%.

Here is the food list we all use
or if you prefer, a shortcut list - all 8% or less

My Michelangelo is allergic to red meats (they make him vomit). I found it out by trial and error: he didn't throw up when I fed him poultry but did when I fed him beef. ohmygod_smile

It really depends on what you're looking to avoid in the food and how much you're willing to spend. Tiki Cat Chicken varieties are a favorite in my household but they're too expensive to feed every meal. I found the Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets to be low carb, cheap enough to feed two growing kittens, and only contained "brewer's rice" in terms of carby ingredients (vs. corn, wheat, peas, carrots, etc...).
