Hi,

Not sure how I found this but learned that there is a VetPen full of insulin for use in dogs and cats which is available right now in the U.K. I am wondering if we can get it in the U.S.?

It doesn't say anything about the cost.

Here is a video on the VetPen:

It says if you are interested in the VetPen that you should contact your local MSD Animal Health representative.

I don't know if it's available. However, Caninsulin is not an insulin that is recommended for cats. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends either Lantus or Prozinc for cats. Caninsulin is harsh and shorter acting than either Lantus or Prozinc.

Also, unless it can do half units, it won't have fine enough increments for dose adjustments.

It comes in two sizes, one for big dogs, one for small.

I used the small one with my Milo when he was first diagnosed about 18 months ago (I'm in UK). The needles are HUGE in comparison to standard insulin syringes. The pens can measure half units, but are clearly designed for droolers rather than moggies.

Maybe the company should consider changing their website then? It clearly says it's for use in CATS and dogs. :YMPEACE:

Caninsulin is the only approved insulin for feline use here in the UK. It was developed for dogs but the manufacturer quickly convinced the Veterinary Medicines Directorate that it was suitable for cats too despite there being more than 50 million years of evolution separating them. Intervet, who owns the brand, clearly wanted to monopolize the market.
So, in the UK, we are stuck with caninsulin unless your vet sticks their neck out. To admit that the vetpen is not suited to cats would lose them a huge market.
Don't you just love massive global pharmaceutical firms?
