Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let folks know that I am working on a carb list for the PC Extra Meaty line.

So far they have given me the As Fed values for 2 varieties.

You can view at the link here what I have so far. I hope to have the balance in a few weeks. Please let me know if the link works okay!

The small cans are as much as or more than FF Classic but the medium and large cans look like good value.

I have a second tab with photos and ingredient listings - seems like the photos don't work on a mobile device but hope the ingredient list is helpful.

@Brashworks Thanks for the info. it's nice to see we may have an alternate brand of food instead of just feeding fancy feast. I to look forward to the final results.

FYI, I'm on mobile & I saw the photos no problem.

@Vegetable thanks for letting me know about the link being okay. On my iPhone the pictures didn't line up properly and I'm a bit OCD about that sort of thing!

I'm also thinking of trying to get the Whiskas info, the ones in the plastic 100gram containers. I got a few for Genghis based on the ingredient list and they haven't affected her BG badly that I can tell - really want to know the phosphorous levels - but they smell so much better than the FF. I have two cats now on wet food and the cost is pretty outrageous between test strips and my dog with the heart condition so I'm looking for a decent quality food that doesn't cost a fortune.

I don't feel too badly about not feeding some of the "human grade" brands. I tried to get Genghis eating the Nature's Variety Instinct canned and she turned her nose up at it!

Thanks so much for doing this Melanie! It will be so helpful for us here in Canada. We are still doing a mix of pricey foods- mostly Weruva and FF mostly because I am watching the phosphorus for him- so it will be good to have some more choices:)

I switched Billy to PC last week after reading good things, and I have no idea if this is related, but he's been sneezing and wheezing since. This morning he didn't want to eat and was lethargic. The two changes I made Sunday were to start using Polysporin on him and Iswitched from Friskies Pate to PC Extra Meaty. I can't see how either of these would cause sneezing but the vet thought they might. Billy got prednisolone and he's back on the Friskies until I figure out what he's reacting to. No poly for his ears either. Too bad because he seemed to be doing great on the Extra Meaty... hope it turns out that he can start eating it again soon. To the vet in the morning for a closer look. He is eating again tonight though :)

Wish I could say I have every single variety but I hesitate because I know that several varieties have two different formulations depending on whether you get a small 85g can, or the larger sizes. If in doubt, check the ingredient list (see the Food Chart tab under ingredients and photos - second tab). Anyway, the updated spreadsheet can be found here, with gaps. I am still pursuing definitive data, but I wanted to get out on the list what I did have for sure. @Kiara, did you ever find out what was giving Billy the Sneezes?

I will be feeding Genghis the chicken pate in the 156g can (it's the only size it comes in - do NOT buy the chicken in the small cans as it looks nearly identical but it is "chunks" not pate and has more carbs - actually it isn't "awful" as it's still under 10% calories from carbs, but with two cats getting the bigger cans just makes sense and Genghis' BG does much better on 1.9% than the higher ones). @Asrael, this line has much lower phosphorus than FF. I don't know if you have NoFrills stores your way, but I can find the 156g cans for 69 cents there and I stock up. I have cut my feeding cost nearly in half and I feel confident that the quality is no worse that FF or Friskies.

As a side note, I contacted 12 companies and only 3 responded with any data (PC Extra Meaty, Performatrin, and Boreal - the last of which I still need to load the data but in speaking with another member I am not convinced it's a complete diet as it has no taurine added, but I would expect you could use it to supplement as it seems a very good quality food, certainly an alternative to TikiCat or Almo, also extremely low carb but not complete diets).

I got some BS answer from PetSmart about their Grreat Choice foods having a "proprietary formula" and they couldn't disclose the values - I gave them a very ... er... direct response regarding the fact that several other national brand companies had disclosed the data easily, that their statement to me was a load of bunk (yes, I used that actual word!) and that I would hastily and strongly recommend against anyone purchasing their food. Ever. I got similar evasive answers from Mars Food, makers of Whiskas (Genghis did okay on this but Jet, my civvie, would throw up whenever he ate the Beef variety so I stopped feeding any kinds), and Special Kitty from Walmart (which, upon reading the ingredient list, I wouldn't feed anyway).

So, the list isn't complete or definitive, but there are some nice options for Canadians, anyway!

Thank you so much for your time and energy in this MElanie! I can't wait to look it over later- long day today! We don't have FF stores- but do have Superstore- and they have box sets for 55 cents a can- just have to make sure they are the "right" varieties!

Thank you so much!!

@Asrael, glad to help and Trouble is looking good! If that 11-ish on the 18th was a bounce he sure cleared it nicely. You must be very pleased!

@Kiara, poor Billy - well glad it was something "fixable". I had a peek at his SS, I'm no veteran but it sure is good you are getting all those mid-cycle tests. He is really coming around.

Thanks to you both for replying - it's good to know this can help some folks.

@Brashworks I work 30 min away and work about 50 hours a week... luckily I can work a day or so a week from home and I've had the man friend home a couple times recently to test during the day as well. It's not easy... completely different social life, no camping, coming straight home after work EVERY DAY. But I have faith it won't be like this forever and he is worth it. And this food seems to be helping lower his numbers!!!

@Kiara, well give that man friend a hug and an award! That is amazing!

I hear you on the lifestyle change - darn it, give yourself a hug and an award, too. I hear so many people give up on their pets and it's not the easiest thing but you are so right -- they are worth it. Glad to hear the food is helping!

@Brashworks - Just had a chance to look things over Melanie! Wow! So much work you put into it all! Thank you so so much! I will definitely try out some of the PC brands, and I have been wondering about Boreal- so will try some of that too! We just bought tons of FF last week as they were on sale at superstore for .50 cents a can.. but he will go through them quickly:)

I am so happy with how Trouble is doing- .25 u only now- it makes me feel that remission is possible! So exciting:) Genghis is looking amazing too!! It is so wonderful to see- .1u such a small amount and such good numbers!!

Hope you are well!
