Real long story but our broken diabetic Hefner - last PMBG 53 has gone off wet food. He was eating it amazing from the day we got him Thursday to Tuesday. House is airconditioned. He was integrated very well with the family on Tuesday though. No outward signs of anything wrong. He's a very mellow cat. I may have to get kibble. I don't want to believe me. He's probably a food managed diabetic. 3.5 years old. In the shelter from February. Overdosed on insulin for at least a couple months.

So what are my options. Our other non diabetic kibble cat (adopted in April) is still on dry food only - wellness core. Still working on converting him. His sister is eating wet food well.

He was originally flagged as diabetic at the shelter due to the amount of urine. Vet was prescribing two units of humilin N shooting blind but on prescription DM kibble which most likely saved his life.

Off to see if Binky's list has anything.
 
Well he ate about an ounce an a half of wet food - with three temptations treats crushed in the top. Guess that was better than kibble any day.

Evo Kitten has 7% carbs. The fish flavour has 10%.
 
I'll stick with temptations for now. But if I have to switch to kibble it looks like Wellness core is 11%. EVO IS 8% If I can find it locally. So I'm good to go I think.
 
Karrie, I see that your cat Maverick had hepatic lipidosis. My non-diabetic cat had it approximately 6 months ago and has had a very slow recovery from it. I'm very worried about her right now again because since Oscar has become diabetic I need to monitor his food intake therefore I can't just leave the other cat's favorite dry food out. So now both cats are eating wet food but I feel like the non-diabetic cat needs more to eat than that. Gah! Just thought I'd share since both our cats had the same illness.
 
Thank you for reading that Maverick had it. I lost him in April suddenly. I always get on my soap box and spread the word about FHL so no one has to go through what Maverick and I went through. He was so close to dying in 2008 and had a feeding tube for ten weeks.

Do you have a baby scale/petscale/shipping scale that you weigh your two cats on? This is one of the best things people can have to monitor their cats health. It caught Maverick's diabetes before symptoms showed up. He had a higher than normal unexplained weight loss and off to the vet we went for blood work.

How are your cats doing?
 
PS your non diabetic with the history of FHL needs to be monitored closely. Maverick lost a lot of weight in his switch to wet food. I had to supplemental assist feed him with a syringe every day and do blood work to make sure his liver was coping.

in case u are looking for evo dry, if you have Global Ryan pet food stores in your area, they usually carry most EVO brands.
When I was using EVO sometime ago, Global Ryan was the only pet store I could find that sold EVO brand.
Google for their website and you should be able to find locations in your area.

I don't have experience with FHL, but my cat Gabby had stomach cancer it it was a struggle getting food in her and keeping weight on her. What you may want to do is feed a higher calorie food--that's what I did with Gabby. A good friend of mine dealt with FHL for his cat, and she made a great recovery on a wet-only diet of higher calorie food. I've found the best wet food for weight gain is Hills canned A/D (the only Hills prescription food worth its salt in my opinion), but it's a little high in carbs (13%), but if your cat isn't diabetic then that is fine. My friend's cat recovered very quickly on the A/D, and then he swtiched her to a high cal commercial food after that (which she still eats even though she's fully recovered).

For commercial foods, Wellness Kitten formula was the best thing I found to put weight on Gabs. But because she got picky with foods as the cancer progressed, I also fed Wellness Chicken, Turkey, Salmon & Trout, as well as the EVO regular formula, 95% venison and 95% duck. All worked really well to keep her weight on. Just an FYI if there's kidney issues I would skip the EVO regular canned formula, it's a little high in phosphorus.

The Wellness and EVO foods are all low in carbs so you could feed your diabetic cat those as well if you want to keep your cats on the same food (I always fed different foods and watched the cats while they ate, but during the day when I was at work I'd leave out something that was high cal/low carb for both of them). Just remember that all of the foods I mentioned are high in calories so you'll probably have to reduce the amount of food you feed your diabetic cat to prevent weight gain.
 
Karrie, what type of wet food was he eating? Did you try switching to a different type of wet food? I've found switching the protein source can sometimes get them eating it again, especially if there was a lot of liver in the formula they were eating. A lot of cats just get sick of liver after a while for some reason, even if they liked it before.

Also, have you tried Fortiflora?http://www.amazon.com/FortiFlora-FELINE-Box-gram-packets/dp/B00164YL22 You can get it from most vets. It's basically a packet of powder that you mix with the cat's wet food, and it's good for their digestive system (it's a probiotic). I give it to Bandit when he has poo issues or I'm switching his food up, but it also has the same flavor stuff in it that they use to make dry food appetizing, so you can also use it to make the cat want the wet food like they want the dry.
