Morning all,

Will be starting to give Lantus shots this coming week. I know I will have to give it twice a day preferably every 12 hours. If my cat is not eating at the timing of 12 hours, second shot, can I give it to him an hour earlier? Does he have to be eating when I give it to him, lets say an hour after he eats? Thanks for you time.

There is usually a 15 minute window or so for dosing lantus. If you give the shot an hour early or even an hour late it can be considered like increasing or decreasing the dose. While it's best to stick to the 12/12 schedule as much as possible, there are times when it is not possible to do.

In most cases, Lantus and Levemir are best used on a 12/12 schedule when following this protocol.. However, sometimes life does not afford the luxury of adhering to a strict 12/12 schedule every day of the week - every week of the year. Don't let fluctuations in your schedule deter you from using either one of these wonderful insulins. Shooting every 12 hours is best with this protocol, but many caregivers have worked around their limitations successfully.

The cat doesn't have to eat when the shot is given. If you know that your cat will eat and has no issues with eating, then you can still give the shot and let him eat when he likes. Most people feed meals to their cat and therefore, can time the shot with meals. But if the cat is not hungry, then you don't want to force him to eat.

Do you serve meals or leave it out?

Thanks for the reply. That was one concern I had with giving the insulin when eating. Now I just need to figure out which sites to be inject into. He does not have much in the way by his neck. He has gotten quite skinny. Again, thank you....relief... dancing_cat

I always injected in the flank area, not the scruff. You may find that easier -- here's a photo of the flank area....
