Our Vet had prescribed Caninsulin and now I am working towards switching to Lantus (without the blessing of our Vet). I have more than a few U-40 syringes left. Can I use these U-40 syringes to administer Lantus ?

@RohitKumar
I really don't think so, it's the other way around so you will have to order U-100 syringes with half unit markings for lantus

To administer this amount
of U-40 insulinDraw to this level
in a U-100 syringe
You can order the U-100 syringes with half unit markings from Amazon without a doctors script

No, you need the U-100 syringes for Lantus. Caninsulin is a U-40 insulin, meaning 1 unit in a U-40 syringes is 2.5 units for a U-100 insulin. You need the smaller syringes.

Depending on where you live, I expect not the US, we can help you decide what insulin syringes are available for you.

And to add on to what Wendy said … once you get U-100 syringes, please clearly label the U-40 syringes as such (or mark them as “for Caninsulin only”) then put them away in a high cupboard where you won’t accidentally grab one. More than one caregiver has accidentally grabbed the wrong syringe resulting in a significant insulin overdose.

Big no 🫣 There is no way to convert a Lantus dose to a U40 insulin syringe. Lantus is a U100 insulin and you MUST use U100 syringes.

U-100 will have 100 units per mL, and U-40 has 40 units per mL. This means that U-100 has 2.5 times the amount of active insulin per mL, therefore 2.5 times as strong.

You will overdose your cat if you attempt to use U40 syringes.

You can offer the U40 syringes to the vet to use for in office or to clients in need. Or post them in the Supply Closet here https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/supply-closet-for-sale-or-free.15/
