Vet sent home prefilled syringes with needles that look like harpoons........

Hmm. I don't think so, but word of warning. I did this with Pearl once, thinking "no sweat'. It didn't all go in, got on her fur and burned her. She has a dime sized bald spot. I will not do it myself. SHe really hurt for several hours. It was sad :( And I have that bald spot to remember it by :(

Gail, I don't know how "thick" the Baytril is but all I can tell you is that I use the harpoons when I need to for Moochie because it's easier than transferring a prefilled to an insulin syringe. It's really not as bad as it looks. We're all just so used to the insulin syringes that the tuberculin syringes and their needles look huge.

I also did try an insulin syringe once (31 g) to give Eartha a shot of benadryl and it took forever. Made it worse than if I had used that 22g harpoon.

i really do not have an answer but possibly a suggestion, if you trust the dose from vet.... Do you have any smaller size needles ( syringes from giving insulin?) you could transfer (turn prefilled syringe from vet upside down pull out plunger and fill like you would drawing from a vial) and administer baytril that way.

Dear Gail, and, of course, you too, sweet Houdini,

The answer is no. And, yes, I do know how big those syringes are!

You basically have three choices:

1. Bite the bullet. Gently "grab" the fur/skin between Houdini's shoulder blades, try not to gag or tremble, aim and shoot...

2. Return those pre-filled syringes to Houdini's vet and ask for liquid Baytril (bottle comes with an eye-dropper thingy) and squirt the dose into the side of his mouth (this method also requires holding his mouth closed for a few seconds after the squirt)...

3. Return those pre-filled syringes to Houdini's vet and ask for Baytril pills and pill Houdini.

I have done all three with Gizzie. Also returned the liquid Baytril (after it was soon all over me because I was too slow on the holding her mouth closed part...) and got pills. Fingers heal...

Hope this helps... Good luck with whatever method you choose!

Love and countless may this soon be a thing of the past kind of hugs for you both,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: If you go the pill route, coat the pill in butter first... That invaluable tip came from The Butter Goddess, dear Jerri and Opie!

Agreeing with Karen/Deb/Susie ... and asking a quick question : Why Baytril? Was a C & S done that showed Baytril to be the best/only antibiotic of choice?

I ask because of the associated risks of blindness in cats and Baytril. If there is another a/b that would work, you may want to consider it.

Thanks for your help ..... I was really in a panic when I saw those needles. I had to do it so I tried the first time and was a total fur shot....went right out the other side! The second one was better. I wasn't afraid of an OD since I know the first one missed completley.

Karen, to answer your question....lots of bacteria in urine and culture should be back today. Tried Clavamox liquid and it made him sick. I think Dr just wanted him to start some ATB until the culture came in. Since he has a problem with his stomach already Dr didn't want anything to irritate more. I'm not a fan of Baytril either....

BTW - a tech on FB that does kitten rescue said she uses 31g with Baytril.

Just for information, Baytril injection is not approved for feline use in the USA. The label for the injectable says:
"WARNINGS:

To get to the label go to the following page and click on the Baytril injectable link
