Can I prefill syringes the night before?

Hi all, I'm new to this and we just started Lantus.. I have a tremor that is most pronounced in the morning - and no, I don't drink - and would like to prefill the AM dose before I go to bed. This would mean about 8 hours in the fridge. I know it's no-ideal, but thought I'd put out there. - Thoughts?

Molly, you are going to get more responses on this question, but I just did a quick search online and found this for humans:

If you cannot prepare an insulin dose but can give the injection, you may need someone to prepare your insulin dose for you. A family member, friend, or health professional can prefill insulin syringes for you. If you prefill syringes:

  • Store prefilled syringes in the refrigerator with the needle pointing up to prevent insulin from blocking the needle opening. Syringes filled with one type of insulin (rather than mixed insulin) will keep for about a month. Read and follow all instructions on the label.
I am thinking that it's not ideal but you have to work with what you have, we all have made adjustments when we met hiccups on the road.
Hugs and kudos for looking for ways to take care of your kitty. Could you create a signature so that the pertinent information is available with your posts? Here is a link so you can do that: SIGNATURE
Have you begun home testing yet? It's really important to test kitty's blood sugar level to ensure that it's safe to shoot insulin, and to see how the insulin is affecting the cat.

Thanks, Idjit's mom, and I have been home testing for two weeks in anticipation of starting insulin. At this point I can get readings 2 x a day without much difficulty, but we're supposed to do a curve in a week and that may be a challenge.. I will create a signature and start a spreadsheet, too. At this point all readings are recorded in a little paper notebook.

I do that sometimes, just keep it in the fridge. 12 hours shouldn’t be a problem.

I understand your issue but it is recommended to not prefill syringes with lantus. The quote below is from page 3 of this paper on insulin usage. You might want to read the entire discussion on prefilling of syringes on page 3.

Summary
Aventis Pharmaceuticals does not recom- mend prefilling syringes with Lantus and storing for any period longer than needed for application. In addition BD states the following (9): “BD does not recommend that any of our syringes be prefilled more than a few minutes in advance of the in- jection. There are no conclusive studies to determine the safety or risks associated with this practice.”

From everything I've read, you cannot pre-fill syringes with Lantus, unfortunately. Other insulins you can, but not Lantus. Let me see if I can find the sticky on that :)
