Can I Give Mirataz Safely?

I will update SS when I get a chance. Tiger's vet is having me try a week off insulin, because he believes Tiger is making some. But, while his blood sugar is 200s, he is not wanting to eat today and looking lethargic. I have some mirataz and a different appetite stimulant. Would it hurt to give him some? I could also subQ some lactated ringers I have on hand.

Thanks in advance!

You have been changing the dose too much. It’s better to give 1 unit x2 a day than 2 in the am and nothing in the pm. I’m not sure why your vet suggested a week off but I don’t agree with that given the data you have. Do you know why? Whet you’re seeing can be due to high bg and no insulin. And the combo of no insulin and not eating can lead to ketones. Can you test his ketones at home? You can buy the urine test strips at any human pharmacy, but I’d recommend you put him back on insulin and start at 1 unit x a day to see how he reacts @Bron and Sheba (GA) wdyt?

IDK, he just hasn't been doing well. I just now got his SS up to date. It was suggested down to 1 unit twice a day and we went back to his vet and his thyroid and other blood work was normal. He is so thin now. He is drinking, but doesn't want to eat.

I don't need an Rx to get the ketone test, do I?

No prescription needed. I also think it would be helpful if you could get a few more tests in. Can you test during the day around +5,+6 and at least once more at night like a +2?

how much are you feeding him? Is he acting nauseated?

Most days, I could. I am supposed to be working an extra shift tomorrow, but I can on Wednesday. I gave him 1 unit of Lantus just now and I am going to try to syringe feed feed him some smashed up fancy feast pate and water.

He doesn't seem nauseated, just uninterested in food. I usually open up a can for him and my newly blinded cat and they each eat it up.

I don’t know why the vet would say to stop insulin for a week. That is not a good idea. I would also get a ketone urine test done asap to check there are no ketones.
nit giving insulin and a cat not eating is inviting ketones into the picture.
If he’s not eating he is most likely nauseated. Even if he doesn’t look it to you. I would ask the vet for some ondansetron and cerenia asap. he needs to eat. Let him anything at all at the moment. It’s really important he eats.

Can you get some tests in during the cycles? Just Preshot tests does not tell us much. We need to see tests during the cycles to see how low the dose is taking him.
I don’t know if 1 unit may be too much. We will
Only know if we can see some more testing during the cycles.
As soon as you get the ketone test done let us know

He's lost a lot of muscle mass. They're doing the ketones test, and I'll ask about the injection.

My Sheba got very thin when she was first diagnosed. She regained all her muscle mass once she was in better numbers and getting adequate amounts of insulin.

I am so sad to report he also had a mass in his abdomen and was in ketosis and is now at the Rainbow Bridge. He was VERY LOVED, and we miss him already. So much.
