I'm new to this forum and being a diabetic cat owner. I'm looking for some can food choices. Felicity has dry in the morning and can at night so it shouldn't be too hard to switch her to all can. After reading Dr Pierson's articles on catinfo.org I would like to switch her to all can food but don't want to go through my vet each time. I down loaded the chart on can food but it seems really confusing to try to figure out which one would be best.

I will be purchasing a blood glucose monitor tomorrow especially since I purchased dry diabetic food from the vet and they didn't say anything about testing her blood or adjusting her insulin. I don't want to be giving her too much insulin.

Another question on the can food. How much should she be given for each meal? For our dogs we give one 2 cups in the morning and the other only 1 1/2 cups. At night they get 1 cup each with a half can of dry. Should the cat get a full 3 oz can in the morning and night or just half and half?

Thank you
Casie

I feed Friskies pates, except Mixed Grill.
Anything with column 3 under 10.

I put out about four 13 ounce cans, twice a day for 16 cats.

Gracie is a big girl and gets 5.5 ounces twice a day. She hangs out in my basement (the lights are on and she could come upstairs)

A lot of us just feed the Fancy Feast Classics or Friskie's pate's

At this point, you can pretty much feed her as much as she wants. Until they're better regulated, our kitties are actually starving to death because no matter how much they eat, without insulin, the glucose can't get into the cells.

Most of us feed several small meals over the course of the day. Some try to get most (or all) of the food in the first half of the cycle (so they aren't adding food in the last half when the insulin is starting to wear off anyway) but some feed every few hours throughout (except we don't feed in the 2 hours prior to shot times so that the test result we get isn't influenced by food)

Once she's better regulated, her appetite should come down. You can also weigh her once a week...if she needs to gain weight, feed more...if she needs to lose weight, feed less

I have found out through trial and error what works best for my cat. I only make on change at a time and give it several days to adjust. I use both Friskies and Fance Feast pates. I feed her 5 times daily in small amounts. With only 2 feedings daily I found it hard to keep her blood sugars stable. With the more frequent but smaller feedings She seems to do much better. I have 3 other cats (no other diabetics0 and I keep them on her schedule. It took a bit of adjusting but now everyone is with the program. Good luck from jane and stewey.
