I know some of you all have FIV kitties, my civie was recently diagnosed with FIV and I've read up on being careful with vaccinations for them but what about antibiotics for wounds? I have some antibiotics left over from last year that I could use to help him, the expiration isn't until December but was wondering if it'd still be good.

There is no reason an FIV+ cat cannot have antibiotics. In fact I would think it would even more important to treat any infection as soon as possible to prevent their immune system from being overwhelmed.

That said, I would caution against using an antibiotic you have left over before at least speaking to your vet. Different antibiotics work best for different kinds of infections. Some are broad spectrum while others are more specific. Some are for aerobic bacteria...some for anaerobic. And with the increase in resistant bacteria these days, I'd be a little more cautious about getting the right treatment for an FIV+ kitty.

Thanks Linda, I wanted to be sure before I gave him anything. The kind I have is Clindamycin, the vet gave it to me for cat bites/wounds/abscesses so it looks like that'd be what he needs right now. Shame the vet is closed for Labor Day D:

If the Clindamycin is liquid and the bottle was previously opened and the bottle does not say use to discard X days after first opening and the liquid looks clear I would use the Clindamycin and call the vet on tuesday.

I double-checked the bottle when I got home and it didn't say anything about discarding so that's good! I think I will phone up the vet Tuesday, he's moving better today but better safe than sorry.

I had an FIV kitty for many years and I kept him because at the first sign of any problems I took him to the vet. While he lived with me he took many antibiotics. Sad to say he passed last year from a surgery he could not seem to get over.
