Haven't been able to post for a few days, except a little.
Callie Mae is doing FANTASTIC!!
No insulin today.. :RAHCAT

Her amps was 116
+3-102
+9 114

Getting ready to test her pmps and give her dinner.
She's been yelling at me all day like she's starving!
Went to see the Dr. today. She had traces of blood in her urine still. Also some crystals. Did an ultrasound on her bladder to make sure she didn't have any stones, which, she didn't thank God! He put her on an antibiotic.
Baytril. She has to take it twice a day for 2 weeks.
Anyone have anything to say about that? Will it affect her bg's? Insulin? Things like that?
I'm sure he means well, but, considering what I have already learned in just this short time, I would like to ask the opinion of people that deal with FD all day, everyday. Not just randomly.
As far as her diabetes go, he called her "The Miracle Cat". Apparently he has never experienced a kitty going otj. He wanted to know "WHAT" are you feeding her. I said Friskie's...like it was common knowledge....Evidently, he thinks Callie is a miracle, not that I'm a genius. I tried.
Oh, and she gained 3 pounds. :o

And I should have said this first
Hi Everyone! **waving**

Great news on the great numbers for Callie!!! So happy for you. Paws crossed the bladder problems clear up soon. I'm with you in that I did not think my vet was as impressed as I thought he should be in how well I did in getting Max OTJ. I tried to tell them about the diet change, but I don't think I was explaining it very well and that they got it.

Three cheers for Callie and Mommie :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT
We know it is a team activity.

Hope she's feeling better soon. I'm glad you got her in.

Beautiful numbers, yay!!!

All the vet said was "she's a miracle"? I was hoping that he would want to learn more about how you did it at least.

Miracle cat? :-D

Maybe if you keep your vet updated with how awesome you are he will eventually be open to receiving info from you on what you have done.

I've heard people here mention that infections can mess with BG levels. Maybe once Callie Mae gets rid of that infection she will be on her way to gettin' off the juice? *crosses fingers*

Baytril is the big guns I think. We have used it several times (civies) and never had a problem, but there are some potentially scary side effects [uncommon though!]. I usually ask for something else and only go with it if they think it's truly the best option. Are they doing a culture? I'm not sure they can once they are on A/Bs, but that in theory would tell you if there is actually an infection or not and what type.

Wow!
Not sure I want her on that.
I think I need to get more information on what exactly he did today.
The sample he tested, I brought from home. Perhaps I should ask him to perform a C and S or whatever it's called.
All I know is that he spun it in a centrifuge. Said the ph was really high, 9, whatever that means. I don't know what is normal, that there was a lot of bacteria in it and it had crystals. And he commented on the smell. Her urine has had such a strong, putrid smell.
She has been drinking water. I have been putting it in her food bowl at meal time. She will consume every thing in the bowl. She leaves it completely empty.
Worried about what I read concerning pain also. Sounds like there is no way of knowing for sure whether or not she has an infection, but there is obviously something going on in regards to inflammation and I don't want her hurting. I will ask him to give me something tomorrow. Is that something he will do just by me asking? I've never TOLD my vet I want this medication or that medication. She doesn't *appear* to be in any pain, but I'm not wanting to take the risk. Especially if I don't have to.
Oh--the questions...............

AND~~~her +3.5'ish number is 88!!!! All by herself!
:RAHCAT :RAHCAT flip_cat :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

is'nt a Lot of Bacteria in the urine an infection?
my cat has been on antibiotic...forget name, pink bubble gum smelling liquid I squirt in his mouth.

Nice number!

I wanted you to read the thread and have the info, but was worried it might upset you. I do really respect Dr. Lisa and her opinions. Hope the info doesn't worry you but gives you some talking points with your vet. I guess you could just say you had done some reading and had some questions?

I'm kinda confused about that. Been reading some info from Dr. Lisa and from what I understand, there are a lot a variables in determining that. That's why I think I need to talk to him tomorrow to see exactly how that determination was made. She really stresses the C & S thing in being able to properly come to that conclusion which involves sending the sample out, not just doing in house diagnosis, and since I brought a sample from home I am questioning it.
And she also mentions in dealing with her own cat to determin if he had an infection that because his urine was so concentrated that an infection was highly unlikely. Callie Mae has super concentrated urine right now. That's part of the reason it smells so bad.
And the baytril causing permanent blindness has me a little scared!

:thumbup great numbers! My understanding is that cats tend to be very stoic so it is hard to tell if they are in pain . Some advocate giving pain meds if there is any reason to suspect pain, and if the cat seems to do better, they assume there was pain.

I have used Baytril before. It does have potential side effects-- but we had no problem with it

My Henry had bladder infections after he became diabetic. The first 2 times they tested in house at the vet's and gave him a shot of some antibiotic there. After it was back again the third time a few months later, my vet suspected he may have had a low grade infection the whole time since first treating it because his numbers were remaining high and sent a culture off to a lab in CA to check for gram negative bacteria and it came back that is what he had, He was put on Cipro for 2 weeks and was rechecked and the infection was completely gone after that.
It seemed to me his numbers were even more wonky than usual while he was taking the antibiotic, so yes I think an antibiotic can affect their BG levels.
BTW, Callie Mae is doing awesome, looks like she will be OTJ soon!

9 for urine pH is quite high. The normal range is I think 6 - 7, but although vets will say that 7 is fine, I found my cats who were prone that way would get infections starting around 7. That's the alkaline side, where infections thrive. I found the 6 - 6.5 range to be ideal. Anything below that is too acidic (fairly uncommon I think that it goes that way), anything above 7 starts to be too alkaline. Once it gets alkaline bacteria thrive, and crystals start to grow. If you can get the pH back to a normal range, the bacteria can't survive and the crystals will dissolve (not true of the acidic kind, but the alkaline kind will dissolve). Also I think infection can drive up the pH so it's kind of a vicious cycle.

Has she had urinary problems before? If not, I'd look to what might be causing it now all of a sudden. Food change is an obvious thing, though I think they tend to do better on canned than dry, so that wouldn't be an obvious culprit I guess.

Other thoughts are fluids (did the vet give her some maybe?) to help get her to pee more and flush things out, or mixing more water with her food, etc., to get more fluids in her.

UTIs can be a bear, but hopefully if it's from the diabetes and she is doing better now, then once maybe this is cleared up it won't be a recurrent problem.
