Calley just vomited all over the place

Hi.....

I know that Mel has told me that Calley is adjusting to the new insulin...but I'm so worried. Calley has been on Lantus now for 24 hours and her numbers have gone sky high and she has vomited twice today....brown stuff/liquid.

Her number this morning was 430 and tonight it was 266 at 8pm. Two hours later at 10pm(just now) she threw up and I tested her and she was 243.

Help....what do I do? Anything....or just be consistent with the 2x/daily insulin.

Am I to give her .5 or 1 unit? Do I water down the food or just leave it as is? Should I only be feeding her twice a day at insulin time or do I feed her whenever she wants(which would be several times a day)?


I'm trying to be patient....I'm trying. Really trying. But I'm worried. Her BG numbers were lower on the N.
 
You hold the .5 for 3-5 days so she can build her shed.

Yes water her food down, cats have a low thirst drive because they are designed to get their fluids with food.

Small frequent meals are best for her pancreas and will help it heal.

As for the vomiting...besides the dog food is there anything else she could have gotten into? Does she do a lot of lip licking? Was today a different flavor or brand of food?

What flavour of food is she eating? Fish flavours are guaranteed to make Sammy turn herself inside out throwing up
 
No lip licking that I saw but she also wasn't right with me either.

No...nothing for her to get into. I put the dog food into a covered bin today. She vomited the last two nights post insulin.

I'm worried about her pot bellied look. Family has commented on her looking fat whereas I see/feel boneyness except the chest area.

I think I'm going to take her a new vet and see what they say. The vomiting worries me. Though she is chasing me throughout the house begging for food. Maybe I should give the lantus a few more days

OR is the vomiting concerning regardless of insulin?
 
The vomiting is concerning regardless of insulin. Especially since you say she's thin but looks bloated. How's her poop looking?

Is she pooping okay?

It's possible she's just scarfing and barfing since it's changed color with the watered down food and high numbers with the change in insulin.

But I really want to rule pancreatitis or any other complicating factors out.

By the way yesterday was actually a fantastic response to the Lantus. Most cats numbers barely move in the first 72 hours she had an over 200pt drop.

It sounds like there is something else going on with Calley. It is good that you take her to a new vet. My Irritable Bowel girl is boney with a swollen stomach as well but she rarely vomits anymore since she started getting hydration in her food and stopped hogging the water bowl.

Praying for you and Calley... I know you are having a difficult time with this but we are here for you and hoping you can get some answers for your dear sugar.
 
Is she still vomiting? I agree with Mel about the pancreatitis. this happened to Cedric in July 2013 and that is what he had. Good luck to you!
 
Her fur is very unkempt. She looks horrible. Her AMPS was 311 this morning at 8:00am. Last night in the middle of the night I found her trying to get into the bowl of dry kibble. I fed her some wet food and went back to bed. I woke to a small amount of vomit this morning. :(

What test do I ask the vet to do for the pancreatitis? How will they treat for that? How do they treat for IBS?

She is still drinking and peeing way less than before. Her poos are sometimes diarrhea and sometimes a very loose form. No hard tootsie rolls for several days.


Mel....the numbers are looking good for the Lantus? really. That is encouraging. I need every ounce of hope.
 
She really is doing fine in terms of the Lantus as far as I can tell from looking at the reactions to lots of cats when a dose change is made, and particularly when starting. Changes really do take a few days because of the way it works, but because of this it is MUCH safer and tends to be more effective in the long run. And what you want is for her blood sugar to be as stable as it can be in the long run, even though that means a few more days of it being pretty high in order to start working effectively toward that end goal. It was lower on the N because that takes effect immediately, but it also left her system just as quickly, which tends to be less ideal for most cats.

I really hope you get the vomiting sorted out. I agree that skinny (which is probably at least partially from the diabetes) plus bloat is not something that you'd expect from just the diabetes alone and is a symptom of something else. I really hope it's something easily treated. And honestly, most everything that's treatable is much easier to treat than diabetes, so at least that's some silver lining, eh?

You're doing great. This is so stressful and you're managing it well. Just breathe.
 
I'll take any silver linings I can get. Thanks for the support. I sure hope Calley's vomiting can be figured out. It's quite a mess and must be painful for the sweet girl. :(
 
Maybe try 1/4 tablet of Pepcid AC (plain, nothing added to it) about 20-30 minutes before meals to see if it reduces the vomiting.
