Hey all,

got a call about another foster at emergency vet hospital. Was taken last night. Read the vet reports and it appears the kitty is Hypo.... low BG and low temperature. This kitty is NOT diabetic and is NOT on insulin... Foster has no insulin in house. What causes a kitty to be hypo and what can be done? please help we cant afford the vets to run every test under the sun like they want to do. They have her on sub-q fluids and are warming her. Is there anything else needed.

How low is the bg? Are there other traditional hypo signs present?
hypo can indicate severe malnutrition. It can also be caused by pancreatic cancer. An xray or ultrasound may find a tumor if one is present. There has to be some sort of blood test that can check the pancreas.

As for immediate treatment, same as db cat hypo. Something sweet like honey or karo rubbed on gums. Some dry food with canned food gravy over it assuming kitty will eat.
Did they give you a specific BG and temp?
What sort of fluids are they giving?

Here's a recent thread: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=50449 A normal cat's blood glucose level may be as low as the 40s.

Did the vet report specifically say "hypo" (meaning low bg) and "low body temperature"? Low body temperature is also called hypothermia which a vet may shorten to just "hypo".

As I had posted about her I thought I should let you know. Charlotte (the kitty I feared had hypo) passed away. She was not getting better and could not really move. It was believed that she may have had Pancreatic Cancer and that it was too far gone to be helped. She was a foster and had been in a home with a nice man for 1 1/2 years. To her she was home and she was happy. Fly free Sweet Charlotte .... fly free and be in pain no more.
