It started innocently with sniffles or low appetites but in a few days sniffles turned to steady runny nose, drooling, nose sores and bleeding mouth sores. Out of 9 cats 7 have symptoms of some sort in varying degrees and combinations. The two who didn’t catch it (Goldie & my meezer boy Chai) are the youngest with current vaccines. So much for not giving vaccines to older cats………

My oldest girl (17 yrs) is semi feral and she had the worst of the mouth ulcers with bloody drool….horrible to see! Tried to scruff her and she bit & scratched me pretty bad. Bites are now infected and hurt like hell! Just today, after a week, I can type with any speed :-D She spent 2 ½ days at the ER and all this week at my regular vets office. They had to sedate her to examine her mouth yesterday  I think she comes home today but I know I won’t be able to handle her enough to give follow up meds….sigh. All we can do is hope a weeks worth of ATBs at the vets office will be enough.

3 of the worst spent several days at the vet including Houdini, on IV’s and ATB’s. We seemed to have turned a corner (crossing fingers) and appetites are picking up, running noses & drooling have almost stopped. Some still have mouth sores, I can tell by the way they are eating. But all in all I'm seeing improvement :-D

I’ve encapsulated this pretty well but consider for a minute what it takes to nurse 7 sick cats, begging them to eat one at a time! On top of all the running back and forth to the vet, store for BB Food and Pets Mart getting different foods hoping someone will eat, I had to fly to Phoenix for 2 days for a business meeting, trying to work during the day (thank God I work from home) with swollen sore hands.

And if all this wasn’t enough!!!!! Monday DD was admitted to the hospital with an unusual strain of pneumonia that is not responding to ATB’s like it should! Yesterday was her B-day and she was really depressed at having to be in the hospital. Praying hard she will start getting better soon.

If you all could spare a few prayers for her, I’d be grateful.

OMG (((((((((((((((((((((((GAIL))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

You have been thru the wringer!!!!! Wow! I am so sorry you are dealing with this! Sending lots of cyber hugs and healing vibes that all the cats get over this soon and that your DD is better fast too.

I know from experience how rough dealing with sick feral and semi feral cats can be.

I have lived in the country for 34 years and during this time have had to live trap, spay/neuter/vaccinate and take care of feral felines that have strayed to my barn. Just two years ago, I had a feral litter of 5 (about 6 months old) that I had to live trap/neuter/vaccinate. Because it was clear they had started to breed, this had to be done in February, a very cold month. The young cats were healthy when they went into the vet - but because of the stress of trapping, spaying and vaccinating I received very sick cats back. I had to keep them in my house for several weeks while they recuperated. They had bloody drool, bloody mucous, and I was scared to death I was going to lose them. I felt like I was in way over my head. On top of that, they developed conjunctivitis and I had to figure out how to get ointment into a feral cat's eyes. Not easy.

I have found that Chicken Gerber Baby Food (must not have onion or garlic powder in it) will prompt most sick cats to eat. Medication can also be mixed into the food. If that fails to get them to eat, buy beef liver, microwave it to whatever level of cooked you want it to be, and then puree it. I have not yet had a cat refuse to eat it. Medication can also be mixed into the pureed beef liver. I have found the only way to medicate a feral cat is to put the medication into the food.

Anyway, I hope this advice helps. I am happy to hear that your group appears to be on the mend. Everyone of my sick
ferals recovered and was released back into my barn, where they are provided food, water, and shelter 24/7.

I know prayers helped my group, and I'm sending prayers along for your DD and your group of felines. And for you, too,
as it is emotionally and physically exhausting. You will be rewarded for all your hard work when you see your DD and your felines playing together.

I have heard this is a new strain that isn't contained by the previous vaccine, and I have heard it's horrendous. Karen/Rambo dealt with this a while back and may have some ideas for you, You have all my sympathy, Gail.

Not sure if Beef Liver Puree would hide the taste of Clindamyacin. That wasn't on the list of medications my group was getting. But, it's always worth a try. That Beef Liver Puree has worked when nothing else would.

The "virulent calicivirus" has bee n around for five years or so. Like viruses in general, the "virulent calicivirus" strain is just a mutation of the "standard" calicivirus. However, it is unclear if the there is one strain of "virulent calicivirus" or that there are different strains. The following has good info on calicivirus.

((((Gail)))) You mentioned you were having some problems but WOW, that's alot of problems. And DD with pneumonia. The worst I have ever felt was with pneumonia. Prayers for her....prayers for you all!!

It's so weird that you posted about this! A coworker who is in vet tech school said that 17 of the new cats they got from shelters this week have calicivirus. And now all of them are on antibiotics. It's such a nightmare. I hope everyone in your house continues to improve!
