Cali - Diagnosed in July

Hello fellow feline people! This is our sweet girl, Cali (AKA mama kitty). We met her when we were asked to foster her when she was pregnant and until the kittens were old enough. We failed this foster assignment miserably and kept her and two of her four babies. Best decision ever. Anyway, this summer she started losing weight, her fur looked weird, and she just didn't seem to be her chipper self. We are having a lot of trouble getting the train back on the tracks with regard to her blood sugar and are looking for advice through the forum.

We've been to the vet numerous times, have had her insulin dosage changed (she's currently on 3u of Novolin twice a day), we've changed her diet, and we still can't get her blood sugar under 750. As I am familiarizing myself with the forum, I am feeling like my vet is not the brightest star in the sky and there are more options for Ms. Cali.

Anyway-- thank you for reading this far! So glad I found this forum and I look forward to learning and contributing.

Welcome, what a beautiful girl Cali is!!! We can definitely help you get her on the right track. Come to the Main Health Forum and tell us more about sweet Cali. Include what you’re feeding, if you are home testing (highly recommended!) and any other health issues Cali may have. Look forward to seeing you there
 
Hi Jennifer and Cali. What a charming kitty. As Sharon said if you will post in the Main Health forum HERE and tell us a little more about her, we can certainly offer some suggestions to getting that blood sugar better regulated and getting that sweet baby feeling better.

There are other insulins that might work better for her, and we can go into more detail about how they work, costs etc.

We do ask new members to create a signature so that kitty's information is available whenever you post. It can be edited and updated when/if changes to that information happen. It's also very helpful to know what part of the world you are in as supplies/food brands/insulin cost and availability differ.

Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the country/time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.

Welcome, what a pretty girl! I see why you fell in love. Your vet might be just fine for other things, but almost none of them are specialists who deal with diabetes day in and day out.

The group should be able to help you sort everything out, and the "stickies" at the top of each forum contain a wealth of information that is far more than most vets give you upon diagnosis, so I would just start reading as much as you can. Over in the Health forum we'll be able to dive in deeper, as I assume you are probably giving prednisolone for her asthma -- that may be what pushed her into diabetes at such a young age.
