Have you used calcitriol and what was your experience?
Gus's Creatinine levels have risen from 2.4 to 2.7 over the last year so we put him on Calcitriol - although I don't know if it actually effects creatinine levels it does prevent or slow the onset of secondary parathyroidism.
Within a month of Calcitriol he went from happy and playful with well managed blood sugar to lethargic/sleeping most of the time with an increased appetite. He just didn't look like he felt well - my mom even commented on that when she saw him. He started getting sick on foods he never got sick on before and getting sick when I gave him his fish oil supplement. His blood sugar also went up - probably due to eating more and being way less active.
He was tested and I do not have the exact numbers - my vet will be emailing them to me - but my vet did say his numbers were beautiful. How frustrating! His numbers are beautiful and he feels like crap!
My vet did tell me that most cats improve on Calcitriol, but they have the odd cat that doesn't.
It is so frustrating because I want to slow down the kidney disease - although there is still a debate on how much calcitriol helps. Gus is a sensitive kitty, but he was doing so well before the Calcitriol. He has been off of it for 10 days now and is way more active again and not sleeping as much. He now asks to go out for walks again too.
