Cabergoline Questions - timing

Tomorrow, I will pick up Jackson's Capergoline after work. I will start him on it on Tuesday.
I may have certainly asked this before; but how do you remember, or set an alarm for, every other day?
Because it may cause tummy upset, should I give it before, after (how many hours?), or with food?
 
I gave Cabergoline daily. However, I currently have a couple of cats who get every other day meds — and some who get daily meds. In order to keep track of the every other day cats’ meds (because sometimes it’s Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and the next week it’s Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) I have a very low tech means of tracking this…. I bought a small magnetic “white board” that is on the refrigerator and I write down (and check off) which cats get which meds/supplements and when. The every other day cats have their own section. I check off when they get the meds.

I don’t have a cat who needs a spreadsheet anymore. I had a spreadsheet for my heart kitty, Ginger, because she had so many meds — three times a day. I know you did for your Ginger too. You should be able to have something simple for Jackson.

I am really hoping for Cabergoline to really help Jackson!
 
I was so prepared to go after work to get Jackson's Cabergoline. I get off of work at 4:00pm and tried calling three times to confirm it was ready. Each time the phone rang 20 times until and answering maching came on and I left one message. I wanted to know if his medicine was ready before I made the drive.
And then I found a message somewhere on my phone.. that some med had not been delivered and it was not ready.
I called a 4th time and this time someone named Jane (finally) answered and I asked about his prescription and she said did you get my message? and "I was horrified that it was not in yet." She said she would call me tomorrow to let me know if his prescription was ready.

In the mean time, I (we) wait.

Oh I am sorry you are having to wait! I hate waiting when I have made up my mind about something…. especially if it’s something that I hope will help one of my cats!

How do people determine to give Cabergoline once a day as opposed to EOD?

How long should I wait to see if EOD works before trying once a day?

Do you cut the dose in half when it's changed to once a day instead?

He's been on it since June 20th, so more than half way through his 3 months supply in the bottle. The bottle is dark brown and has a label completely covering it so I can not see how much is left in the bottle. So, I guess if the dose is the same every day for SID that I could keep using this bottle, but if the dose needs to be cut in half for SID then I would need to go get a new bottle.

When I look at the syringe filled with his dose under my bright magnifying light I see the oil with little particles floating in it. I'm guessing they just crush up the pills and add it to the oil.
Is that normal?
 
The dose is the same SiD vs EOD. You do not cut it in half.

I don't think there is any recommendations out there on when to switch to SID. Some cats start on SID and have a GI reaction and switch to EOD for a while, but that's based on symptoms and going the other way. The South American research group had success with EOD. The study at Royal Vet Clinic, on a much smaller group of cats, found EOD wasn't enough and recommended starting with SID.
 
Looking at Jackson’s spreadsheet… I think it may be good to try daily dosing of Cabergoline for Jackson. It’s clear that he has gotten some benefit from it, but it would be worth trying to see if he tolerates it (i.e., no negative GI impacts) and if he can do even better than he is now.

Has he had any GI problems that you have noticed since starting Cabergoline? Snoring still quieted down? Other positive signs you have seen that he feels better? I see he’s still stealing food so he’s up to his old tricks! I read about the sourdough! He must be fast. I have one cat who is fast enough to get away with something like that— although his specialty is stealing from other cats and fortunately not from our plates. He can grab a mouthful of food and run with it before you know what is happening.

I can barely hear him snore anymore and it is not as often.

Jackson is a gentleman, and if Sabrina comes to his bowl he steps back and lets her eat it, so I have to really guard his food when there is Cabergoline in there.
Only when Sabrina has finished eating and moved away from her own bowl will Jackson advance to lick her bowl clean.
I had to teach J.D. that with Ginger, but Jackson is a natural gentleman. lol

He used to get into my kitchen trash when he first came here as a 4 month old. His mom must have taught him that when he was wild. He didn't do it for years until recently. My food, it's another story. I think he's like a reptile (a crocodile or a snake) in how fast he snatches grabs and runs away with his prize.
He's gotten weird about treats too. Sabrina takes them so delicately and gently from my fingers and Jackson snatches them away FAST and often I get bit.
When I test his ears and he tries to bite me he doesn't break the skin (KNOCK ON WOOD) it's more like a warning bite. When I have a treat between my fingers he snatches it so fast and doesn't look what he's doing, and yesterday he got me right in the cuticle of my thumb. I think if that gets infected I wont be here to help you if I'm in the hospital. I thought yesterday that I need to find an animal behaviorist............
