Has anyone ever used/heard of 'by nature' canned food? Picked some up, and it looks good, plus it comes in a big 6.5 oz can. Is it a good food?

It looks ok to me ingredient wise (personally the only thing I don't like are the gums, but that's me).

Looks like it may be low carb - how about writing to them and asking for "as fed" values for protein, fat, and carbohydrate. It would also be helpful to have "as fed" values for phosphorus, fiber, water, ash, and calcium, along with calorie information. Cannot use any number which is labeled "maximum" or "minimum", because it is by definition not an accurate value.

Theinfo was on the old board but I can't find it even with a Google search. But I do have it on my own list:

Protein..... Fat.... Carbs.... Fiber.... Phosphorus.... Calories per 6oz can

Organic Chicken & Chicken Liver 29 65 6 348 100
Organic Turkey & Chicken 31 63 6 341 100
Organic Turkey and Turkey Liver 38 55 7 376 100
Chicken & Mackerel 38 55 7 430 100

Note: These are the ones in the Organic line.

I don't have numbers for the 95% meat canned line but it looks like it is low carb.

Squeem-
I have contacted them several times requesting nutrient profiles. Although the CS guy was friendly and seemingly helpful, what he sent was in fact NOT the As-fed /dry matter values I requested. After looking more closely at what he emailed, it appeared to be the same 'guaranteed' analysis on the can/site with rounded vs exact numbers just entered into a chart....though it stated "as-fed' at top. So i called again hoping to talk with the nutrionist who I have yet to make connection with. I did talk to this same CS guy again and let him know what he sent did not appear to be the actual as-fed values as requested. He said that was all he had, and wasn't sure I'd be able to get anything else. I emailed him something I'd been sent by another manufacturer asking if they could send me something similar with the various breakdowns. I got a thank you and that he would pass it on, but never heard back after that.
I bought several cans and have been reluctantly feeding. My boys like it, but I am not comfortable and feel like I'm feeding blind without information available to confirm values.
How did you arrive at these numbers? Were you able to obtain more accurate information?

I was told that it is human grade, there is some connection to Menu foods, but they make distinction that it is only one liine and it's the Canadian location.
I have good notes somewhere with all these details and the email info. for values I was sent. Everything looked ball-parked.
It's not cheap, but I wonder what's really in it. It's at Petsmart which is unusual...none of the Natural pets stores where I buy everything else have even heard of it.
I have been meaning to call back to try to talk with their head nutrionist to see what I can find out, but was given the impression they may not want to share more than they have. Do you think your figures are reliable? I'd love to see what you were able to get from them.

Per brekadown in Squeem's post:
Organic Chicken & Chicken Liver 29 65 6 348 100
Organic Turkey & Chicken 31 63 6 341 100
Organic Turkey and Turkey Liver 38 55 7 376 100
Chicken & Mackerel 38 55 7 430 100

This doesn't look right to me. What could the carbs be making it 6-7% per k/cals?
the calories are greater per can than this.
wouldn't the protein in the chicken/chicken liver & turkey/ turkey liver be roughly the same? (these are 9% apart)

I dunno...I just can't get the straight skinny from them which leaves me uncomfortable.

If these values above are correct for phosphorous, i have no business giving these to Hank or need to do so sparingly as he has had urinary issues in his past.
I had no idea they were so high. Int he chart he sent me the raw NON-converted numbers for phosphorous were .15% for each of these varities. How would this translate into 341-430 Ph?

Help to figure this all out please. I'll share what I have with anyone (different form above), but feel what was provided me is erroneous and not sufficient to get what we need.

I have bought some of this food, both the Organics and whatever other line they have. My biggest issue with it was that some of the cans in the Organics were not full and the consistency of the product did not look the same from one can to the next. Even the smell seemed off. If I remember right, this was the batches I bought from Pet Food Direct when they had it on sale uber cheap. And I discovered why, which seems like a very shady tactic to me as they had to have known their quality control was lacking and wanted to dump the product somewhere fast.

Between that and what Betty reports, I would not recommend their food especially after my recent experience.

I stupidly bought some of their new Gold Leaf Selects varieties, which are similar to the new Fancy Feast Appetizers with whole meat pieces. I have no idea what they did to the chicken, but it is huge pieces which are so stiff I have to cut them with a knife for my cats to be able to eat them. It "looks" great in the package (it's see through), but once you get it out it's another matter. Why the chicken is not softer I have no idea. It sits uneaten in my cabinet as testament to my ever growing frustration with the pet food industry.

What do I feed right now? Believe it or not, 9Lives! Made by Del Monte, which is probably owned by some larger company now with no more scruples than the rest of corporate America, but you know what? All my cats like it, it smells OK, looks OK, every can is consistent and by golly a local grocery store recently ran a sale on 4 cans for $1, probably because they're changing labels apparently. But unlike other manufacturers (Fancy Feast) when they change labels, the look, smell and appeal of the new labeled cans has not changed and the cats don't notice a difference either.

It has by-products, which I know are not recommended, but in the end, do any of us really know what's in our cat's food? They can label it whatever they want but without more regulation, it's a crap shoot no matter how much you pay for the food.

Stu loves the 95% Turkey & Turkey Liver. But he doesn't like the "organic" line at all (too "soft" in texture), and doesn't care for the 95% chicken and chicken liver, either. I've been feeding the 95% Turkey & Turkey liver for quite some time. The By Nature company is in New Hampshire, but the 95% foods are made in Canada. They smell good. I have just started buying cases from PetFoodDirect and have not had a can that smelled off, or that wasn't full.

Ella & Stu

P.S. to Betty: The By Nature foods are in all of the "natural" pet-food stores in NYC.
Hi!!! How's Hank?

My guys liked the beef, and sometimes the 95% chicken. None of them liked the organics. But I saw potato starch as an ingredient in some of these and well, potato starch worries me because that can't be good for FD and for kitties in general. I haven't ever seen a kitty dig up a potato and eat it.
