Buying a New Meter

I will have to buy a new meter soon. I have been using my mother`s Accu-Chek Aviva as she is in the nursing home. Anyhow I am almost out of strips. Although I like the meter and have not problems with it I can not afford the strips to it. They are about 55.00 for 50 strips.
So I would like to know what current members are using and need input on it.
I know Walmart has meters and I have seen the Relion brand but there are several variations of this meter, the Ultima, Confirm, so what do I buy and what do most people use here.

relion micro or confirm. they use the same strips but micro is sleek and slim. which ever one feels the most comfy to hold. the older version ultima takes a larger drop of blood and sips pretty slowly compared to the other 2

For Mousie, I've used the Freestyle Flash and the Freestyle Lite meters all these years simply because that's what our vet started us out on and i liked it so i stuck with it. the strips are just as expensive as the aviva though.

i've gone out and helped people learn to test numerous times and have used a wide variety of meters and other than cost i don't really think there's much difference in the actual use of them. some are smaller and others are larger, some have to be coded, some don't

as far as the Relion meters, they're probably the most economical as far as store bought meters. the difference in them is mainly that the Ultima is the older model. it requires a little more blood and has to be coded whereas the Confirm and the Micro are the newer models and they require the smaller blood sample and do not require coding.

I like the Accu Check really well but as I said I can not afford the darn strips. I thought I seeing things today at the pharmacy, left my glasses at home so I asked the lady is that he price of the strips? She said sure is.
Even if I only tested twice a day, the strips would last 25 days and it does now work like that sometimes you don`t get enough blood on the strip and have to use another.
So I will have to buy something I can afford the strips for. I just hope when I buy the thing it does not test way off from the other meter.

Check out American Diabetes Wholesale for strip pricing - they are often less expensive than local retail outlets.

And, the Glucocard 01 is the same thing as the ReliOn Confirm from WalMart and they do carry it, and strips.

Do we need a prescription for the meter and strips here in Ohio? Thought the lady at the pharmacy told me just bring prescription.

We didn't that last time I bought a meter and strips. And I see them out on the shelf all the time. The pharmacy might have thought it was for you and most "people" insurance will pay for meters and strips with a prescription.

Thank you for the American Diabetes Wholesale link... the Freestyle strips are almost 1/2 off the pharmacy price!!

This site has been sooooo helpful.
Revson and I couldn't do it without all of you.

Thank you for the site the strips are so much cheaper. Although I will still have to buy another meter when my mother comes home but may buy strips from there until then I really like this meter.

I use the Relion Micro. Granted I am only using it once a week now (and need to update the spreadsheet), but the price was right ($9) and the strips are $02 for 50.

Shop around online for the best prices on Aviva test strips. Many people buy from eBay.

I always bought Aviva test strips from HealthWarehouse.com The test strips labled as "mail order" are usually the cheapest. Right now, the "professional" Aviva test strips are the cheapest at $35.50 for a box of 50 (tht's up from the $25 or so from 2 years ago). Shipping is free. There is no difference at all between "mail order", "retail", or "professional" test strips other than the price.

Still, $30+ for a box of test strips can be a stretch for some people. In that case, look for a meter that uses inexpensve test strips like the ReliOn.

Some people mostly use an inexpensive meter and keep the Aviva or other meter on hand as a back up. You never know when you need to double check a bg or when a meter will just stop working.
