So, if you have been following Jeddie's saga, you know that he has filthy paws and because of that his face is getting dirty and he is generally having trouble keeping clean. And I am having trouble getting his paws clean. I think they are dirty because he drools on them when he sleeps. They were pretty stinky!

Today I found an on line guide to washing your cat - with photos. It kept talking about protective clothing for some reason  Anyone know what "long-sleeved gloves" are?

In the section on cleaning off grease like motor oil, they suggested using a food-based oil as a "solvent" to soften and mobilize the gunk. Something like butter (or crisco or bacon grease). Hmmmmm.....

So, I scooped up Jeddie and took him into the kitchen where I rubbed butter all over his paws. At first he thought, "hey, a snack" and tried licking it off, but pretty soon he realized he was being held against his will. I took him to the sink and poured warm water over his feet and got the butter really soft and gooshy, then I poured baby shampoo right on his feet and lathered it up. At about this point I had a very mad cat trying to grab whatever he could with his buttery-lathered paws. The hardest part was rinsing. It took a lot of water to get all that out and I had to hold his paws under the running water. You can imagine how well that was received.

Finally, I wrapped him in a towel (a LOT more than his front paws were wet by then, but I only had one towel and it was his) and gently dried his feet. They are really small when they are wet. Then I put him on the bed and patted him and praised him and I think he forgave me.

His paws are not totally white, but they are not gray and they smell like baby shampoo instead of something you left in the back of the fridge too long. The big question is: will he let me do this again in another week?

http://www.animal-traps.com/gloves-animal-handling.html These are heavy duty ones, they have ones that are less imposing. Its so that you can restrain the cat without hesitation because you are protected. Some gloves are harder to use than others.

My Carly has stud tail, and nothing has worked to get rid of it except Groomers Goop. They sell it online, and I found it at cat show.
http://www.momsgoop.com/items/27/24/Groomers-Goop-Creme-for-Oily-Coats.aspxIts amazing. They have a degreaser to use first, and then a shampoo, and a conditioner. I didnt use much shampoo. Degreasing was the object. Boy does Carly hate it, and with her arthritis and spinal issues i have to be so careful how I move/hold her.

Awww bless your heart. You are such a good momcat! Bless Jeddies heart too. I hope he remembers how good his feetsies feel after they get a good washing and allows you to repeat. ALTHOUGHhhhhh who knows what smells good to them ???
Keeping you both in my prayers,
jeanne

The gloves are to protect you from getting scratched up when kitty fights back.

Kudos to you, my Gem has had grooming issues and I've had my troubles keeping her clean. No way would she tolerate a bath of any sort, I'd be afraid to try. Good for you, well done!!

LOL, the "long sleeved gloves" question was ironic. Sleeves, long ones versus short, originate at the shoulder and extend down to your hand. Gloves go the other way, right? It's a funny way of saying it.

Someone gave me a book on taking care of cats and the chapter on washing them had a list of supplies that included the usual towels, gloves, shampoo as well as surgical gauze, sutures and whiskey. The steps to take in preparation included notifying next of kin and the last step was changing your mind and NOT doing it. My ex-h and I got a big laugh over that chapter.

He really was pretty good about it. I think next time I will wrap him in the big towel first - a la burrito to try and prevent struggling. His paws are already just as dirty as before the washing though. Sigh.
