Thanks to all for the welcome. It took awhile, but Buddy's spreadsheet is set up. I have recorded data since February, but have entered only his most recent dose changes so far in the spreadsheet. Labs will be added this week. His history is covered in my first post. The problem is that the earlier dose which brought his numbers towards the normal range also brought extreme lows, without warning or any signs. He is now having some reasonable BG's mid-day, but we are hoping to see his daily numbers be less extreme overall. His clinical condition is much improved and stable, with a constant weight, decreased thirst/hunger. His diet is consistent and 100% wet, although I will be adding some freeze-dried treats.

Hi there. Keep up your fantastic job of testing. I see he’s on 1.25 units as of very recently. I hope he will do well on this dose and things will smooth out over time. I’m sorry I haven’t been around much in the last week or so as I have had cat medical problems (and kids on spring break- although mostly we were at the vet :(). I look forward to watching Buddy’s progress.

Oh, also I would be sure to hold this dose for at least seven full days unless he earns a reduction by dropping under 90. Now, if for some reason he has a lower than expected preshot number — at a level where we don’t have data to know how he will respond then you may need to shoot a reduced dose, but right now that’s not been happening so hopefully it won’t be a problem.

Thanks to all for the support. I did go off the rails a bit when his BG’s started showing an improved insulin response, but your posts and articles were very useful in understanding the peculiarities of feline diabetes. Yes, The ‘plan’ now is to continue this 1.25 unit dose for at least 14 cycles, hoping it’s the magic dose which allows all the systems to normalize. If hypos and exaggerated BG excursions continue to pop up, the DVM and I have already talked about glargine for more even insulin levels in this particular grazing kitty.
