@Wendy&Neko

Buddy is still constipated. He's been eating great and has not been trying to go to the box.

We are giving him 1/4 tsp on miralax with each full meal and a small amount on snacks.

(I've tried pumpkin with him before and he wouldn't eat it but i can try again.)

A local pet store has https://carna4.com/our-products/flora4-raw-food-topping/ for constipation.

Is this safe for a diabetic cat?

Flora4 Original ingredients: 100% raw ground USDA organic sprouted barley, flax, green and red lentil seeds. Flora4 Greens Plus ingredients: 100% raw ground USDA organic sprouted broccoli, pea, sunflower, chia and pumpkin seeds.

We spoke to our vet and if he has no movement, we will bring him in tomorrow morning.

We will be doing a +3 test, per your previous post response.

You can try giving him a suppository at home. It is easy and much less expensive than a vet visit. You use the glycerin ones for infants. Feline constipation.org had a good description of how to do this. It works like a charm!

Thank you. We will look this up now - i'd prefer to take care of him at home.
I was a little scared to try this at first because I didn’t know what to expect. After I did it and realized how easy it was I was so grateful I had it as an option. I have since used this for our dog as well and it can really be a life saver! Feel free to message me if you have questions? Good luck :bighug:

Hi when you post on the lantus board we like you to put the Date then Buddy then AMPS first, then you can go back and add your additional tests and continue with Buddy's PMPS and any additional tests after that
If you don't know how to back to your title to add them. Look to the right and you will see the word Thread Tools tap on that then tap on Edit Title and add them then tap save :cat:

@Kyle & Simon (GA)

I am having a hard time finding actually infant suppositories.

Are these enemas (in the link below) what you are referring to or are there suppositories that you insert with your finger?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SD6BS4?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_M2NDZGAMQ1G77KXFP6PA

How many days of constipation do you generally have before doing this?
I think I would wait until day 4 or 5 for Simon before using these, after trying everything else first :confused::confused: But if he was actively straining and obviously uncomfortable I would use them sooner. They often work immediately, so it was a big relief for both of us.

I like the suppository better because it is less messy than the liquid like the ones you linked. Those will work too though. Anything that is only glycerin will work. You can find these at any pharmacy as @Diane Tyler's Mom said.

We found the infant suppository. Is there a lube that you use, so that it goes smoothly? I saw the feline constipation site say KY jelly is okay to use. Have you used that?

Yes I used the ky- you can usually get that wherever you get the suppository. If the suppository seems too large you can shave it down a bit. It should not be at all difficult to insert.

@Kyle & Simon (GA)

Thank you so much for all your help.

We got the suppositories (infant) and KY. He hasn't gone for 3 days and he's not even trying - that's what has us confused and nervous. His appetite has also been great!?

Will keep you posted!

I don’t think the suppository can hurt so you could just give it a try before you go to the vet. I don’t think 3 days is an emergency though so you could also wait and see. Good luck :bighug:

I just wanted to add that if the suppository doesn’t work for Buddy or he goes a number of days without a bm and no signs of even trying, he may have a motility issue where food is not being moved into his large intestines from higher in the GI tract. I think the féline constipation site describes this. There is medication he can take for this (cisapride). This is alot less common than stool hardening in the lower GI, but I thought I should mention it in case stool softeners (glycerin, miralax, etc.) don’t seem to work.

@Kyle & Simon (GA)

We are just monitoring him now and want to have everything, just in case.

In your experience, how quickly has it worked? Do we need to keep an eye on him, to make sure he gets to the litter box?
I think that sounds like a good plan! Sometimes it works immediately! I don’t think it ever took more than 20 minutes? I would put a towel under him or something when you do it- usually it is a very hard impacted piece of stool that passes -so not messy at all- but that is only my experience. I would definitely have the litter box nearby JIC! :eek:

The glycerin suppository was a fail. Couldn't get it inserted. He was not happy and it seemed like he went into lockdown back there. Fortunately, it seemed to stimulate him to have a small BM. So he's now had two very small BM's three days apart. We were reading about using a warm wet cloth to stimulate BMs and will give that a try. Any other recommended tricks? Any stool softeners other than Miralax that has good results? Thanks so much.

If you go to the top where it says search type in lactulose then tap search ,you will see a lot of posts about members who have used it. I do know you need your vet to write a script for it. I see you said you might take Buddy to the vet tomorrow morning , you can ask him about it :cat:

Sorry it was a fail:bighug:the suppository may have been too large? I think the liquid might work better if you want to try again. Just massaging that area can work too. Glad he had some bm at least! Lactulose and miralax have the same mode of action but you could try that! I will be wishing you good luck :bighug:

You could go to 1/2 tsp miralax 2/day. You can always back off if that is too much?

I had not seen anybody recommending/using > 1/4 tsp 2x/day, so we had not tried that. We just got a script for Lactulose from our vet and will be giving it to him in conjunction with the Miralax starting this morning. We are also going to add in Benefiber, but not sure yet how much to add. Was just doing a forum search on that. We'll also try giving him a nice anal massage (fun times) ... And yes, I will start a new thread today - Thanks : )

Aw, poor Buddy. I’ve gone up to almost 1/2 tsp 2x day mixed into food with extra extra water (and then more water in all other meals and snacks as well) but only for a day or so at a time. Dropped back to 1/4 tsp once he had a bm. Not sure if this has been recommended but extra exciting play sessions and walks outside (I know that’s not an option for many) really help Herman go. Because we live on a farm I can take him to a sandy outdoor spot (and indoor riding ring with sand in winter) and just play with him with a string or whatever in the sandy areas and eventually playing in the sand gets something inside him moving. But I know outside is not an option for most cats, I’d still recommend indoor play sessions. The extra activity really seems to help. Good luck!
