? Bubby 3/15. CKD treats? 13 days OTJ.

The people on this site are so knowledgeable, who would know better than someone who is living with a cat with diabetes and CKD.

The good news is that Bubby seems to be feeling better even though his BG is still on the low side. Since I already paid for and have the Azodyl I have been opening that up and adding to his food. He's had 4 doses now and only feeding the Iams Tuna Topia. It is higher in carbs at 19 but lower in phos. /194 than the Ziwi peak. I plan to order some tiki cat to try. Not as many options for a cat that doesn't tolerate chicken. All hills and Darwins appear to have chicken added in some form. Question about treats, are freeze dried shrimp okay he eats quite a bit of these and I don't know about phos. In them?

I haven't started the fluids, don't know if we'll do that yet but I made an appointment with his diabetes/internal medicine vet for Friday. After I made the appointment she finally got back to me about my email, it often takes 24 hours or more for her to answer me. The good news is she agreed with everyone on this site. She said if she got blood test results like Bubbys she would check his Blood pressure and do a urinalysis with a culture to start. She said there are diseases and conditions that can cause low BG. Hopefully we will know more about his exact condition after Friday. They have every possible tool and test at the teaching hospital, I just didn't want to make the 1.5 hour drive each way if I didn't need to. Bubby doesn't like car rides much, but it sounds like this is best to get a clearer picture of his health.

I had a different vet here in town tell me yesterday that he wouldn't be surprised if Bubbys diabetes came back and not to get my hopes up about him being OTJ. It's been 13 days and I sure hope he's wrong.
 
Can you get the As-fed or Dry Matter basis numbers from the manufacturer of the shrimp treats? Thats the only way to know for sure how high phosphorus they are.

I think I would look for a lower carb wet food. 19% is pretty high carbs and might not keep him in remission. If it's only chicken he can't do, there are other low carb/low phosphorus options including turkey, duck, beef, lamb.

I should have said, He doesn't do well with poultry. He won't eat lamb, we tried instinct duck and venison for a bit, if I remember it was the bones and textures of those he didn't care for. Anyway I think those are to high in phos. now. He eats seafood best even though I thought I read somewhere you shouldn't feed to much seafood. I will try a lower carb food. Right now his BG is to low so the 19 % doesn't seem to be effecting him. I haven't tried any straight beef. He didn't do well with wellness Beef, venison, lamb. I don't really know what is bothering him about the foods that don't agree with him it might be something totally unrelated to the protein source. Just sorry the Ziwi peak is to high in phos as that is the non seafood food he had eaten and tolerated best.
 
I found a site online that lists cooked shrimp as have 120mg of phosphorus per 3 oz. serving. It is a site for humans with kidney problems.
 
I'm glad you're able to look further into Bubby's recent tests, and happy day 13!!

FWIW, some kitties are a bit "backwards". Trix suddenly went OTJ when her advanced CKD and severe pancreatitis hit. Most kitties' BGs would go sky high, but Trix did it differently. Sometime you never know. Hopefully some switch just suddenly "flipped" for Bubby, too.
 
Merrick has a limited ingredient duck that is low carb/low phosphorus, as is the Natures Logic Duck and Salmon. For straight beef, Natures Logic has a beef option, and there is the Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites. The fuds hunt can be SO frustrating!:bighug:
