Bubbles 10-02 AMPS=91

There is a method of micro dosing or dosing by drops. Try searching for it and get some ideas of techniques. Of course, 91 is in the normal range. You can see if her body stays in a good range by itself with no insulin. Or you can "chase" the number until it is in a range you feel safe giving .25.

All good "problems" to have. :-D

Yeah, I'm thinking at 91, you just smile and say "see you in 12 hours, Bubbles".

To dose by drops:

Take a used syringe and some colored water (so you can see it!).
Fill the syringe to the 0.5 unit level.
Carefully squeeze out drops, making them about the same size.
Repeat until you can do this with consistent drops of the same size and number per half unit.

Then you try it with the insulin. How many drops in 0.25 units? What would be less?

Magnifiers may be very helpful. I wear glasses, so the Carson Clip and Flip were terrific. There are also visor and stand magnifiers. All available through various vendors on Amazon.

That' s what I am wondering? Can u dose less than 0.25? I am "eyeballing" the 0.25 and crossing my fingers.;)

You also might see about getting a diluent and sterile mixing bottles for the PZI to make it a lower concentration.

Diluted to a 50% concentration, the current 0.25 would be a 0.5 syringe measurement and a 0.125 would be eyeballed at the 0.25 syringe measurement.

Yes, I am thinking if 0.25 is to be her dose, I do need a diluent. She surprised me this evening with
PMPS=140
Shot 0.25u PZI
She only ate 1/2 can of FF salmon pate, so I will test her later and then maybe she'll finish?

Its OK if she grazes; gradual food intake are less likely to overstress the pancreas.

Rather than trying to dilute the PZI, wouldn't it be more simple to perhaps use U100 syringes and the conversion chart?

Sorry I can't keep all the kitties straight, but just want to make sure...

This is "Prozinc U40" you are using, and the red-capped U40 syringes, correct?

Nevermind. I just remembered that you are using U100 compounded PZI and U100 syringes.
Not sure if I'd try "do it yourself diluting" though.

The vet or pharmacist should provide instructions.

That said, a 50% dilution is pretty straightforward.
Draw up X amount of diluent and place in sterile mixing vial.
Draw up X amount of PZI insulin (after regular rolling procedure to re-suspend it) and add it to the mixing vial.
Role gently until thoroughly mixed/suspended.
Draw out desired dose to administer.

Hi. Bubbles is still on PZI U-40, til I finish the bottle. New bottle is PZI U-100, which we have not yet opened.
I am not worried about diluting (favorite gift was my first Chemistry set when I was 8! lol), my background is in biology and chemistry, and precision and accuracy are pet peeves of mine. I am just thinking my Vet will think I am crazy, as he has NO idea what I am up to  . Which leads me to another question...how important is it that Bubbles have a re-check of labs, and when? Her labwork was drawn 09-02-13. My Vet's instructions at that time were to find a food with a higher crude protein and give her 2u PZI q12h. And to bring her back in 2 weeks to check her glucose level. I told him I was NOT going to be doing BG's on a 15 yo cat. (OH Boy! What a reversal!)

How much is left in the old bottle?
Using the u100s and the conversion chart is a good option that will allow you to dose less than .25u.
Especially if the u100s have half-unit marks.

You could use your U40 insulin with U100 needles and the conversion chart. That way you would be able to dose smaller amounts.

As for the vet. It depends on what you want and need. Lots of people here only go to their vet for emergencies and vacinations. I see no reason for going back for lab tests at this point. I think I'd call him and act as though he should be thrilled- he SHOULD be. Say something like". I know you are going to excited to learn that I am testing at home and Bubbles has been in near normal ranges, with me giving tiny doses. Can I mail the link to my spreadsheet to you?".

If he is not happy for you, that will tell you something very important about his ego......

Thanks for the info! My Vet techs were very generous with the free PZI, I probably have a couple of ml. left, so I will def try the conversion chart and the U-100 syringes. As for Dr. V, he will be thrilled when I show him Bubbles SS.He is the one who talked me out of euthanasia, he said Bubbles is far too healthy and feisty, and has a few years left in her. He is 75 yrs old and is in this business for 45 years because of his love of animals, and is always trying to find ways to help us save money. He recently was the only vet to answer his phone, examine and operate on a stray dog who was hit by a car. No charge. Gotta love him. :-D
