? Bronx back to drinking excessive amounts of water

Hello all,

What else could be the reason why he is drinking a lot of water and even laying by the bowl at times? He hasn't done this since the dx of diabetes as the cause back in late 2016. I am going to try to bring him in today for BW. Vet keeps insisting we do a fructosamine test since his urinalysis keeps showing high sugar even though his BS seems fine most of the time. All labs are on his SS. Thanks!

I highly doubt it's the outside temps. He's an indoor cat and central AC keeps inside comfortable all the time. He has never gone near the water bowl ever until the diabetes thing came up. Gets all of his water from the extra amount I add to his wet food. But now that he's back to the water bowl, the litter box is looking like it did when his BS was out of control.
 
His most recent labs look good, so I would agree to recheck if you are concerned. Since he eats RC, did you see the recent recall?

I would not waste the money on fructosamine, but with sugar in urine, I'd want to check urine for bactetia more often. I am trying to talk my vet into a special dip strip to identify bacteria quickly (then culture if need be).

I initially panicked when Rose was laying by the water bowl, but vet reminded me that her natural drinking is the best thing.

Remember BW can be really "off" if dehydrated, so I'd want to have the vet evaluate hydration status (and show you how to monitor it yourself if needed).

Instead of a fructosamine, I'd suggest you step up the testing a bit. There are some glaring holes in the SS, especially at night. He got to 34 the other day, then no testing for hours after that and then none at night. Who knows how low the depot was taking him. :eek: I definitely would not have gone back to 9 units. That dose took him way too low. Remember, we determine the dose by how low they are going, not the highs. 8 units might even be too much, but I can't tell with that little data.

Drinking a lot of water could be due to high numbers - cause is going too low and bouncing. Try getting a picture of what is happening to his blood sugar. Bouncing could also result in sugar in the urine. Other reasons for drinking could be nausea. How is his appetite? His recent kidney numbers look pretty good.

How is Bronx other than the drinking? Coat look good? Grooming? Playing? Walking fine?

All about the same except for the drinking. Should I not even bother getting blood work? I thought maybe thyroid issues (which he never had) and a T4 test might shed some light? U/S did show signs of pancreatitis but everything else looked fine.

Okay... Well, I am making very loose connections here and I hope that there is nothing to it but crazy ramblings. I was feeding the RadCat Venison as well. It is one of Pig's favorites. But, then something happened and things went amiss and I am not sure where. They sort of started to spiral down. At first I though Bladder infection for Pig because he has bladder problems. However, then all of a sudden he started searching out water. Over and over. He gets all his water in his food, just like Bronx. He had not drank from a water bowl in over a year.

Then Tail started the same thing. We got a dx of colitis for both, but for different reasons. Neither share the same food, except I did try Tail on the RadCat venison 2 times before he said "no way". This landed us at the vet too looking for BW and answers. Pig's results came back look suspiciously like pancreatitis. Once I moved him solely to the RadCat pork, symptoms seemed to diminish.

Now, none of this makes sense because theoretically the e. coli strand it was recalled for should not have had pathogenic effects in cats. I just wanted to note the coincidence simply because sometimes it is more that sheer coincidence.. Hopefully these turn out to be just more of my mad theorizing...

This is interesting but the venison is not in the lot that was recalled. His 2nd fav flavor is pork, I will start using more of that and cut out the venison and see what happens
 
Anytime Mav bounces to high pinks, I watch for water consumption, and he does go back to the water, and he begs for food, I hate those stinky pinkies. Hope Bronx comes off his trampoline, looks like he is getting into low territory today.... keep an eye out tonight, that PMPS is just a wee bit shy of 50...even with a reduced dose, you may get some depot action, Bronx was in greens all day..flattish most of the way, but then dropped...post if you need help, want to share, or get some support, I'll be around :)

Thanks so much Christie! I will have to do some more overnight testing, been way too lax and maybe these pinks are due to missed lime greens. Just odd that the drinking started recently but he stopped the first bout of excessive drinking once I got him out of the blacks.

Pork is Pig's second as well and what I am feeding now. There is probably no food relation at all and in fact, some of the number patterns we have seen before. The colitis and water drinking are new, but I am starting suspect that the pancreatic flares are not. With Pig is could just simply be diet change, but to have Tail follow the same pattern..? Seemed a bit off. We do have some environmental stress to contend with as I have someone here to help with Pig's reductions. If they did eat some affected food, the stress might have weakened their systems enough to allow some irritation. I can't be sure of batches as I freeze the meat into cubes and toss the container. Lesson learned there. Wendy is most likely right here.... I just wanted to not the coincidence. I sincerely hope all is well with Bronx and you!!
 
Just my two cents worth - but I notice the same in Luci - when her numbers go high - she's at the water bowl slurping away - cleaning the LB this morning substantiates consumption of extra water - big (and I mean BIG) balls of liquid liter clumps...so I know she's been drinking more and it seems to coincide every time with wearing that nasty yellow and pink outfit I hate so badly...her LB has smaller balls of liquid clumps when she's in lower numbers.

I agree with cancelling the vet appointment until you've been able to gather more data at home. Check the LB for the size of those clumps...if they're huge it's a good thing - all that water that's going in is coming out and rinsing urinary track at the same time - and that's a good thing.

Best of luck to you getting those late night numbers - I hate that part of this disease even more than that yellow/pink rag Luci insists on wearing...setting the alarm several times in a night - ugh... :( :bighug:
 
Another possibility, Acro cats can have excessive thirst issues. Jack drank like a camel even when bg was well controlled(blues and greens).

Good luck on getting to the bottom of the issue. My first vet also pushed for fructosamine tests even after she saw his SS with multiple tests per day, we politely declined.

I have said the exact same thing to my vet.

After some more tests to see if you are missing some lows that are causing some high bouncing and if still drinking excessively, I would get some BW done .

Thanks Ella. No, the water supply hasn't changed. Just odd that he went back to the water bowl after not being near it since late 2016 when he was stuck in the blacks & reds early in the FD dx. Urine has shown high glucose even though his BS has been mostly under control. Almost wondering if I have bad strips or a bad meter but last BW does show he was in the blues.

Phoebe does the same thing. She camps at the water bowl alot. I always find water on her chin like dripping. Its a concern as well.
 
Morning Paul, just chiming in after @Mandy & Rex tagged me. All I can offer is where Titan is/was and maybe that will give you ideas. Titan has always been a big consumer of water even before his DX with acro. After his PU surgery ( crystals in urine and had all the boy parts removed and shortened the urethra) Paula and I have been pushing lots of water into him via food etc to keep the system flushed. With the Acro Dx he has been drinking a bit more then about 4-5 months ago it really picked up and it's been hit or miss on the LB :facepalm:. We did the blood work and all was normal except for WBC but that was a diff issue and dealt with. Dr Becky started floating the idea of "diabetic insipidus " which can be a byproduct of the acro tumor. That is basically the hormone that tells the body that it needs water and or is hydrated is blocked and the cat thinks it is dehydrated constantly and hence drinks constantly. We were going to test for it but are slightly side tracked from the staph infection we discovered thru a urine sample so are currently treating for that. Long story longer, we are fairly certain Titan will be positive for diabetic insipidus and will deal with that when all else is cleared up. Hope this helps, give Bronx a chin scritch for me, Ed.

Not sure myself, Dr Becky floated the idea a while back, she has treated a dog with it and said she will dig deeper for a kitty. We will take it seriously once we get his infection under control
 
Glad to hear you will be doing more testing. Our Acrocats can be pretty bouncy. We have always tested Leo a lot. I didn't always type it in. But if he had low periods, we had a paper trail of how he got there. I hope you are able to find why Bronx is drinking so much water.
