I was wondering if any one is currently using Brewer's Yeast as a suppliment to help in their treatment of their diabetic cats. I was out in the shop looking for Methyl B-12 (as I'm pretty sure I've got a case of neuopathy on my hands) and while I couldn't find that, I did find Brewer's Yeast, which a quick run of research mentioned that it can be helpful in lowering blood sugar levels in diabetics and also good for skin and hair. Of course that's in humans.

Has anyone given this a go? Any findings to report? I picked some up as it was inexpensive and in the worst case I could use it.

What are people's thoughts generally regarding suppliments as an aid for treatment? Success or horror stories or just comments would be great!

Well funny you should post this ..

We have been feeding mocha wal marts special kitty turkey and giblets for a good while now .. About a month ago, they cleared the shelves of it around the country .. two weeks ago (maybe a week ago?) They actually started stocking it again .. the label reads "new improved formula" The ONLY difference in the ingredient list is the old ingredient hydrolyzed yeast is now replaced with brewers yeast ..

I asked on here if that would be safe to give mocha and others came up with some online articles about it possibly helping with her diabetes (she is diet controlled for 6 months now) We tested her about two days after eating her turkey and giblets and she was surfing nicely in the 50's (like normal) When she was on the 9 lives during the food shortage, she was up in the 80's ...

Hope that helps!

I grew up taking Brewers Yeast. I gave it to my boy friend when I met him at age 15 - he had acne. It helped as well as any drug could help back then. We got married and both took it well into our 20's. Our pharmacist used to take it too. Both my children took it thru their teens - was great in stabilising hormone moodiness. It's a food not a supplement (someone told me). I don't think you could o/d a cat with it. Beans (first time I've used that abbreviation) can take quite a lot of it. Maybe start kitty on 1/4 a teaspoon twice a day. I just suggested the lady whose cat has rodent ulcer problems that she try it (b4 I saw yr post). She's in the UK too. I would love to try LB on it - just have to remember to buy it. I have read on this forum previously that it's ok for diabetic cats. My grandfather told me about it - he took it for skin problems - he said it cleans the blood - I followed his advice 45 yrs ago and found it to be very good for moods and for skin. Try it and let us know!

In humans:
In general, excess B vitamins are excreted through the kidneys. You'd have to work at it to OD on them. It is possible to exceed your body's tolerance and have toxic effects.

This may apply to cats too, so please be cautious.
