Hi all, I'm brand new here. My kitty, Chloe - who is 11 - has just been officially dx with diabetes. We've been tracking her blood sugar for two months now & it wasn't high enough to need insulin until today. We tried getting it under control with just special food, to no avail. Yesterday she became confused & stopped drinking and eating, so I rushed her to the vet. They gave me insulin prescription & lesson & ordered up insulin for me. I picked up the insulin this afternoon and vet said not to give to her til this evening - as she is to be on an a.m. p.m. twice daily schedule. She was not 'fine' yesterday at vet - but was FAR better than she is now. Overnight LAST night (after vet trip - before I picked up insulin) she just became super lethargic, was still drinking -but would instantly come out the other end, very wobbly on her feet (hind legs) and just out of it. She was STILL eating her special treats as of last night - so that was hopeful. Today I got the insulin, brought her home at 1 p.m. and had to wait til 6:30 p.m. to give her insulin shot. I got 1/2 packet of her treat tubed food into her and gave her her shot. No improvement yet. She is now refusing to even drink or take the special treat. Forget about regular food - she won't go near it - hasn't for two days. I am taking her back to the vet first thing in the a.m. - as I feel something is so wrong. For the record - her blood sugar was 'mildly' elevated on October 4th when we checked it. She has lost a total of 2 1/2 lbs in about 3 months. Now, suddenly her blood sugar was elevated enough (I believe they said 360) for her to need insulin - but she seems to be suddenly SO much worse. I'm confused & scared. I lost my other cat Benny last year at this time to a brain tumor and the last 48 hours of his life he pretty much looked and acted like Chloe is acting now. It's breaking me to bits. Any thoughts you can give me to get me through til morning - when I will just go to vets without even calling first at this rate - are appreciated. I'm so sorry to have to be here.....she's 11 years old this month & NEVER had an ill day in her entire life. This is devastating to me. I've had her since she was 9 weeks old - she's my baby.
Thanks for any thoughts & ideas - she is on Vetsulin and only takes up to the 1 mark on the syringe (I don't recall exactly what dose that is - but it's a 40 syringe - I believe).
