April 4th was his last day for insulin and his numbers are still looking good and even better than when on the juice. 60's and 70's all month and all of the dandruff that was on his back has disappeared. I can't complain.

Still on Friskies SD Turkey & gibs.

Thanks again to everyone who had a hand in getting us to this day.

It's great to hear an update on you and Boots!!

Looks like all he needed was a little support to get his pancreas working again, and it's doing a great job now!

I forgot to report on his urinalysis from back in April. Here is what my vet emailed me.
Urinalysis was normal with negative glucose and no evidence of infection.

: BUN 36 (n=14-36, 2/25 was 50) so it's stabilized. The other kidney value remains normal, electrolytes are normal and phosphorus as well as the other minerals are normal. I can mail you a copy if you wish. Bottom line: continue feeding what you're feeding now.

Next recheck on bloodwork is 6 months unless diabetes returns.

His BUN and phosphorous was high before so maybe this Friskies SD is whats helping bring those numbers down. Before, she wasn't too gung ho about this all-by-products diet he was on but it sounds like now it's just fine. :mrgreen:
So, for now everything seems to be going great.
It's been a busy spring but I will continue to stop in and read up on how everyone is doing even if I'm not doing much typing.
 
Bottom line: continue feeding what you're feeding now.

I'd say that you probably made your point and that "this all-by-products diet" has improved his numbers! If I remember right, they wanted you to feed their "prescription" food, right?

$2.50 can versus .54 (your wallet is probably a lot healthier too....LOL)

Yes. The list I was given to consider buying was for Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina in either dry or canned. I'm glad I knew better and didn't bite on that suggestion. It still irritates me to no end when I see a dry cat food commercial.
 
It's not just the dry cat food commercials that irritate me, they also hype it up about how healthy the food is by showing a huge pile of green leafy veggies. The other thing is that vets make money off of that 'special diet' food that they sell in their offices. I wish that it was not allowed. So many people are food by these products and trust their vets implicitly to do the right thing for their cat and other animals.
 
So wonderful to read this. I find it interesting about the food too. My vet doesn't push any particular food but another has suggested a better food without all the by-products in ff. When I read stories like yours, I think that food is just one piece of the puzzle and each of us has to figure out what works and doesn't. I'm so glad that you have figured that out for Boots!!
 
What a great report, Dwight! Thanks for posting to let us know how Boots is doing. I have to admit - I do "stalk" your spreadsheet from time to time to see how Boots has been doing! :lol:

I think the battle I was in was half won by just immediately eliminating the dry. No transition period. About four days before our initial vet visit I was reading Dr. Pierson's website because I had a hunch that there was hyperglycemia involved. I was researching as much diabetes stuff as I could. I learned dry is bad. So, two days later the dry was completely gone. Both of my cats, 2x daily, have always been fed a variety of canned so I didn't need to ween them off. Two days after that we went to the vet and got the 437 BG reading. Over the course of the next couple of weeks his BG numbers settled down. The yellows disappeared. It was like magic. I was unknowingly shooting pretty low numbers so maybe that had a positive effect. I don't know. I just believe that the food change was the biggest factor in getting his numbers back to normal. We were just very fortunate that it worked out so well.

I believe there are a lot of good foods out there. The reason I settled on the Friskies SD Turkey is because, besides being LC, it has a relatively low phosphorous percentage. The first blood test I had done show elevated levels of P.... so using the famous food chart we all use, I found this one and settled on it exclusively hoping his levels drop..... which they have done. :-D

You were lucky. Max hasn't been eating dry food for 4 years. His situation is complicated by pancreatitis though.
