We have just joined today! Our boy Boo is 8 years old and was diagnosed last week (7/6/22). Since then we have started him on ProZinc 1 unit every 12 hours. Our at home BG meter just arrived. This is all new to us so feeling a bit overwhelmed. So far shots are going well. Just worried about home monitoring process.

Welcome! I am so happy you and Boo are here! The experienced members will likely be saying hello and giving you the lowdown on setting up spreadsheets etc.. to help Boo best!

Oh my Boo is a gorgeous boy!

This link is a great place to start:
New? How You Can Help Us Help You!
It talks about and provides further links on how to prepare a hypo kit, setting up & using the spreadsheet and creating your signature.

Another place for good information is the in the Prozinc / PZI ISG (Insulin Support Group). There's a number of yellow Sticky Notes pinned at the top of the forum that cover the specifics for the insulin you're giving along with a wide range of topics related to FD.

Just worried about home monitoring process.
@Diane Tyler's Mom can you help out here please?

Glad you found us and Welcome to FDMB! :)

Hi there , Boo is such a handsome boy you couldn't have found a better place to be

If you can set up what we call your signature that would be great

To set up your signature which you will see is at the end of everyone's post in gray, click on your name up top and then tap on the word signature and add this information
  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

We also have a spreadsheet where we track our cats/BG to see how the insulin is working and how low they are dropping, in case you have any questions about the dose members can look at your SS and give you advice on what to do

If you need help setting up the SS just ask ,we have a member that can do it for you in no time
Here is the link if you want to give it a go it will also explain how the spreadsheet works

You can take a look at Tyler's spreadsheet to get an idea of what it looks like, he's in remission now so there isn't that much testing I have to do. Go to the top of my spreadsheet and tap on 2020 and you will see a lot more testing. It says Tyler's spreadsheet at the end of my signature

A little bit about the spreadsheet
AMPS means the first test in the morning , withhold feeding 2 hours prior to testing so it's not food influenced You would put that number in the AMPS cell that means AM pre shot
If you test him 2 hours later after giving insulin that BG number goes in the +2 cell
and so on

Same thing with PMPS withold feeding 2 hours before that test then test and put that BG # in the PMPS cell if you test 3 hours after giving insulin that goes in the +3 cell and so on

The U column means how many units of insulin you are giving
You can start a new post everyday , you would do it like this/when you start testing
Date Boo AMPS # and any additional tests after that
To add those tests to the right you will see the word Tool Threads tap on that then tap on Edit Thread add those tests and tap Save
Do you have the U-40 syringes with half unit markings?
We adjust the dose by 0.25 units at a time. Those syringes make it easier to do that

Always aim for the sweet spot warm the ears up first, you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, test it on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not to hot, like you would test a babies bottle. You can fill a pill bottle with warm water and roll it on the ears also.Just keep rubbing the ears with your fingers to warm them up

6. As the ears get used to bleeding and grow more capilares, it gets easier to get the amount of blood you need on the first try. If he won’t stand still, you can get the blood onto a clean finger nail and test from there.
When you do get some blood you can try milking the ear.
Get you finger and gently push up toward the blood , more will appear
You will put the cotton round behind his ear in case you poke your finger, after you are done testing you will fold the cotton round over his ear to stop the bleeding , press gently for about 20 seconds until it stops
Get 26 or 28 gauge lancets they are best to use when just starting out to make the ears bleed better
A lot of us use the lancets to test freehand
I find it better to see where I'm aiming
You can also put a thin layer of vaseline on the ear ,to help the blood bead up
A video one of our members posted
VIDEO: How to test your cat's blood sugar

Janet is using a pet meter, don't know if you have a human meter or pet meter, if you have a human meter you do not have to do any type of coding

It may sound scary to you but believe me it's not once you get the hang of it.
I can actually test Tyler when he's sleeping.
With the help from all the experienced members here Tyler is now in remission ( knock on wood) since 1-24-2021

Hubby has gotten a successful test sample after several days of trying. Unfortunately he is having to hold down all kinds of forts since I am down with Covid. But we will work on getting a SS started as soon as possible.
