I ran Chem 10 strip last night on Boo and sure enough, positive for nitrates, leukocytes and a trace amount of blood. I stopped by the vet a few minutes ago and picked up some Clavamox. I had a hunch something was "off" with these suddenly high numbers. Now we'll do some extra monitoring as the infection clears.

So, I am pretty exhausted after 3 12's, and am glad to have a few days off :-D :-D ....I'm certain that that's too many days in a row for that long and don't think I'll be agreeing to that again...it just doesn't seem safe.

The DH, Boo and I are leaving town today to pick up an RV we bought in SC...we are big campers and now that we're getting a bit older....like the idea of having a bed to lay our heads down on at night (and of course we will now have a cat with us on our adventures ;-) ;-) ).

I have missed visiting everyone's condos but will be back this weekend and look forward to catching up!

Oh no!!! Poor Boo!! I know Leo's had a few UTI's back when he used to eat dry food and it looked pretty painful........get better soon Boo and sending you massive healing vines.

I hear ya on the 12 hour shifts, i leave tomorrow and will work 7-12 hour shifts.......very exhausting

Exciting on the RV, i'm sure all 3 of you will have a great time the first time you use it.

Hi guys .. aww poor boo with the UTI .. glad you caught it right away and will get her on some meds .. How exciting on the RV! We love camping and put it on hold for the two years mocha was on insulin .. she's too territorial for us to take her with us (we have a pop up) and would go through the screens in a heart beat .. We dream of owning an RV one day! Have a great day!

poor boo! hoping he perks up quickly - one of the side benefits of having a nurse mom is that you pick up on these things! good catch.

enjoy your time away and your new RV - we always used to laughed at people who were in RVs. we have been tent campers and we always made fun of them for taking home along. that would be until we rented one when we traveled in europe with our 3 kids in 2004. couldn't find rooms big enough to have them with us and it is very expensive to pay for 2 hotel rooms. we'd seen a library book about going through europe in an rv with your family. we rented one and it was a super experience. haven't done it since, but i would. hahahaha now i don't laugh at them anymore, although really, some are bigger than houses! hope you enjoy yours!

I'm not sure running a Chem 10 is the best way to diagnose a UTI in a cat. Typically, it's recommended to get a cytocentesis and a C & S to insure sterile growth and that the AB is targeting the appropriate bacteria. There are similar problems with antibiotic resistant bacteria in cats due to the overuse of or use of the wrong AB.

Agreed on the leukocytes with cats, but he's symptomatic and the presence of blood and nitrates is diagnostic enough to make an educated decision on the UTI, and Clavamox has been spot on for Boo in the past with this condition. He's a FIV kitty, which creates a more complex scenario.

Historically, we'll treat empirically, especially when as definitive signs as these exists and send the urine off to ensure we're on the right path. I'm not sure what turn around is your area, but send out C&S here takes 7 days. We don't wait 7 days with Boo because of his FIV status, and now that he's a diabetic....with Ketones, a UTI, and DKA at diagnosis, we especially don't wait.

SOrry to hear about Boo's UTI...sending him healing vines and hoping the AB will get it under control and the BGs will come back down.

Sounds like fun...your trip!! Congrats on your new RV! I had to camp ALOT in grad school. As a wildlife biologist, we were always in the field and camped. So now...my idea of camping is a hotel without room service
And does anyone wonder why Gracie is such a little spoiled princess....like mama, like baby girl

Mike and I were talking about your schedule. I also thought 3-12hr days for an ER nurse sure sounded like an exhausting experience. Our daughter is an oncology RN but she doesn't work b2b shifts like that. Holy cow!!!

Have a safe trip.

Sorry Boo has a UTI, and you sure caught it early. Feel better Boo! Jessica, those 12 hour shifts sound so exhausting. Hope you can get some rest on your days off; take care.

hi jessica, re your question about punkin's SRT - it was 3 treatments done 3 days in a row. that comment of mine was probably confusing - it's 3 weeks post the first day. i should probably just say 3 weeks now. i'll fix that.

he won't have any other treatments. this is complete. they told us to expect the first responses in about a month - that he would likely start needing dose reductions at that time. the way the SRT works is to prevent the tumor cells from replicating. each tumor cell that already exists will live out its life cycle. the radiation doesn't kill the existing cells, it keeps the tumor from growing.

i don't know why he had an immediate drop in his insulin need when the treatment happened. i think that was unusual. it's more common to not see an immediate response. we're trying to not be discouraged about having to go back up in dose. it was pretty encouraging to have him immediately start needing less insulin. gotta put on our patience pants!

Oh, poor Boo. Hope the UTI clears up soon. How exciting on the RV. I have always thought that it would be exciting to buy one and travel the US. And to have a kitty along makes it extra special!
