? Boarding facility, pet sitter, fellow diabetic cat owner in Portland OR?

Hello,

I live in Portland, Oregon and I have a diabetic cat, Mačka. I was wondering if there are members here living in the same city that would know what to do when I need to travel and have to leave my kitty at home?
- Boarding facilities?
- Skilled house sitter?
- Someone who could help?
- Any leads?

Finding good help is something a lot of us struggle with. What I've heard is most successful is to Google "petsitters near (your town)" and then start interviewing early. Have them come over and meet your cat several times to make sure he knows them well enough that when they come in, he doesn't run and hide. Even better is to find someone who's willing to stay 24/7 in your home (they are out there!)

If you start early, you can learn more about them and hopefully feel like you can trust them in your home.

Hi Penelope! I live in Portland. I am preparing my first vacation away from Jackson. I have hired pet sitters and asked friends who have worked as pet sitters. I live in the St. John’s Neighborhood.

That’s great!! May I ask you who you pet sitters are, are they going to house sit? Are they used to handle insulin, testing etc? Will you lower the dose while away? How is this going to work? Please let me know as I am VERY anxious about leaving a Macka :) thank you!!
 
I am planning to lower the dose and, so far, I’m thinking I won’t ask them to test. One of my trips is 3 weeks, though, so I’m a little worried about not testing at all in that time. My sister has a diabetic cat, so I might ask her to do a few nadir tests while I’m gone. My main pet sitters are friends (whom I pay), but this year I’ve also booked Rose City Pets. I see they aren’t taking new clients now. You can go on Nextdoor and look for recommendations for your neighborhood. Most of the services only work in a small area.
I usually ask pet sitters to stay in my house. It hasn’t been easy to find people with experience with injections. I will have to train my pet sitters.

I know there are vet techs on the Rover website, but their pricing schedule is too expensive for people with multiple pets. I have 3 cats.

We always suggest lowering the dose just a bit when the caretaker is away because we can never be sure that our kitties will eat as well for a "stranger", especially when their routine isn't the same. Even if it's somebody they know well, their daily routine won't be the same and that can throw some of them off.

Better to let them run a little higher for a short time than risk running too low for even a moment.
