I was able to get her gllucose checked at home and it is 433. I gave her the insulin the vet gave me which is the novilin and i was told it only lasts 4 - 6 hours. Should I check her again in that time or just wait till breakfast to check again. When she went to the vet it was 300 so it seems to have gotten worse. I have her on fancy feast now as of yesterday. Any other ideas will be helpful.

right now you are just gathering data so any spot checks you can get in will tell you how she is handling the insulin, plus even as long as my girl has been on insulin (7 months) I always get what I call a lights out test, I test her right before I turn in for the night, just to make sure she isn't dropping too low too fast.

And don't worry too much about the high numbers now, she didn't become diabetic over night and she isn't going to be regulated overnight either.

But right now you have a great start, you have her on a great diet, and you are home testing...now if you can talk your vet into a better insulin...the three preferred here are Lantus, Levemir or PZI

It was new and scary to just about everyone here. It sure was for me. But you've found what is probably the best site on the 'net for helping you and Stitch to deal with this.

This site has more information on it than you could possibly absorb quickly. The important things to "get" at first are:

A good low-carb canned food diet is what's best for a diabetic cat.
Home testing of blood glucose using a human glucometer is the #1 thing you can do in order to safely and confidently manage this.
A good insulin such as Lantus, Levemir, and Prozinc offer the best chance at controlling your kitty's blood glucose.

This site is populated by a bunch of incredible, caring people who once were in your shoes, and they are the most generous people I've ever had the pleasure to "meet" in my life. This "place" save's lives and saves your sanity. ;-)

Ask as many questions as come to mind. Somebody here will have had the same questions and will able to give you some answers.

Welcome!

Carl

Er ... we use a candle to indicate a cat has passed. If that is not the case, would you mind editing your first post to remove that icon? Thanks.
