Help. .my boyfriend is taking care of my diabetes cat .be uses one plus ultra from n Walgreen s. What's. A good meter that's accurate for cats r

Lots of people here like the ReliOn meter from Walmart. I haven't seen anything negative about the One Plus.

Can you share more info? Is he 500 6 hours after the 60? What kind of insulin? What kind of food?

Feeding her royal canin diabetic wet and dry food based on vets suggestion royal canin feline diabetic dry food
Is it true that wet food is better ?
And since he was gone this weekend she has been fluctuating alot and am using now reli on prime meters

What insulin? How much? Give us an idea of the numbers. For instance - what's the number before the shot? What's the number midcycle?

Yes, wet low carb is better. See this website by a vet (www.catinfo.org). As long as you are testing and can monitor carefully, you could change over.

1 unit was the dose initially prescribed although we got different info from doc prozinc insulin
I have seen her go as lo as 67 6 hours after giving one unit and gone as hi as 530
All the time she is acting normal which puzzles

That meter should be fine.

Always test before giving a shot. Do not give a shot below 200 mg/dL.

Check the glucose between the shots to check how low the cat goes.

If it goes lower than 50 mg/dL, that is too low and you need to intervene with1-2 teaspoons of wet high carb gravy, wait 30 minutes, re-test, and repeat until the glucose is high enough.

What insulin are you using? A shot of:
Humulin/Novolin lasts about 6-8 hours
Vetsulin/Caninsulin lasts about 10 hours
Prozinc/PZI lasts about 10-12 hours
Lantus and Levemir last more than 12 hours, so they have an overlap effect.

That sounds like a bounce. When their body senses a low number, it can release extra glucose. This causes them to bounce up to a higher number 6 hours later.

There are several things you can do to find out. Do a curve - get numbers every 2-3 hours during a 12 hour cycle. You'll be able to see exactly how the insulin is working- when she starts down, how low she goes and when and how much she goes back up. Or get a couple days of numbers: preshots and mid cycles.

If she is bouncing, you reduce the dose to see if things flatten out.
