Hello all,

While giving my cat his insulin this evening, I pulled back the syringe as normal and checked to make sure there was no blood. But when I took the needle out, there was blood in the syringe at the top. Should I be worried? Do I need to do anything? I'm usually more careful but sort of freaking out right now.

He's on 4 units of ProZinc.

It should be fine, you likely just nicked a capillary, I've done those a few times, we call them blood shots. I was super stressed (actually quite freaked out) the first time that happened, but it's not something that you should worry about. You can always test a little earlier than you normally do if it makes you feel better.

Thank you for your reply. I am totally freaked out and that makes me feel better that you even have a name for it lol. I contacted an after-hours emergency vet and they said the same thing that I should keep an eye out for a couple of hours. I thought I had become a pro at giving his injections too. Nope!

You're welcome! Just remember these needles are quite short, intended for sub-q injection, so the likelihood of hitting a vein is really quite slim.
