My nearly one year old civie left some blood tinged normally formed poop in the litter box today  It wasn't a lot, just two tiny red streaks in one of the larger pieces and a red streak in a small piece. His butt was a little pinkish afterwards but maybe that's normal for him. This is the second time I've noticed blood in his poop. The first time was a few months ago. Civie is fine otherwise. Eating well, playing, and generally being a troublemaker  I'm going to email the vet with the concern but does anyone know if this is something potentially serious?

Re: Blood in cat poop

ECID, but I noticed this with Callie Mae not to long ago, and her the vet just told me to watch to see if it got worse. Said not to worry to much, that it could be from a number of things, like eating rough grass and what not. I kept a watch for it, and hadn't noticed it again.
I know that's probably not much comfort to you. hopefully others will be along shortly.
Paws crossed everything is ok.

Re: Blood in cat poop

Bright red usually means a cut or fissure near the anus...caused by irritation, usually.

Dark brownish blood usually means something higher up and more serious.

It wasn't bright red but not dark red either.

Civie eats NV raw. Maybe a small bone fragment scraped the skin as it passed out of the butt with the poop and caused some bleeding?

Re: Blood in cat poop

I'd say that's a real good possibility.
Just keep an eye out. I'm sure you would notice if something became so dire as to warrant a trip to the vet.

Update

Vet emailed me back even though it's his day off. Love my vet :-D He says not to worry about the blood unless it continues or gets worse. Civie hasn't pooped yet today. He's easy to catch using the litter box - he has a habit of using the box right after I scoop it

Ragnar had blood and mucus too, and pencil-thin stools, for many years after having severe colitis at about a year old. The vets in those days (90s) told me it was just something he had to live with and was harmless (perhaps they assumed it was from scar tissue). It was not!! He had IBD - but now that he is taking Probiocin, he has no blood, no mucus, and his stools are perfectly normal. You might want to try Probiocin; it isn't too expensive, can't hurt, and may help a lot. (Edited to correct typos)

My civvie had blood and mucus stools very regularly once or twice a week for the past five or six years. After Noxin became diabetic and we switched to the wet food (3 months; I only feed gluten free), I have not seen any other occurrences. She also used to be a frequent vomitter, and has not done so (hairballs excluded) since.
