Hi All:

I was giving Morrigan her injection. I use the Solostar pen injector system (not syringes) so, I can't pull back on the needle. It's never happened before but, as I went to inject, she moved (tried to lay down). I may have scratched her skin...not sure, but, I did get the shot in. When I pulled out, there was some blood. I put pressure on it and it stopped quickly but...if I nicked a vein (shot on side, close to hind hip, tenting)...is that a danger or is she ok?

You may have nicked a tiny blood vessel on the way causing some blood to appear.

How is she doing now?

She seems to be doing ok right now, thanks @BJM.
Little monkey managed to get into the bag of catnip through the night (opened the cupboard door with her paw) and was totally loopy this morning as well. So, first thing I did was to test because I wasn't sure what was catnip related or possibly hypo (drunken look). Her numbers were in normal ranges for her.
Then, THAT happened and I worried about possibly having hit a blood vessel since I use the Lantus Pen as the injector and don't withdraw to see if I've hit a vessel.
I panicked! I didn't know if I had done any damage by possibly injecting into a vessel (very first time this has happened so, I didn't know what to think).
I re-did the test +1 hour after shooting, got rid of the loose catnip and am keeping her away from it for today. Her numbers were rather normal for her in having eaten (she seemed to have "the munchies" after a whack of catnip all night!) pretty well just prior to shooting.
I've had an eye on her like a hawk ever since.

But, in hindsight, I think that I may have "scratched" her skin with the needle as I was attempting to inject (she's not at all easy to do anything with or on).
I remember that she tried to lay down BEFORE I even injected...JUST as I was going to poke and I FELT the needle sort of "scrape" the skin.
I tented again (once she was laying down to eat her treat) and poked and shot. So, I'm wondering now if perhaps, I might have actually seen the blood from that "scrape" from the needle vs hitting anything inside? I make sure that I "tent" before I poke so...????

What happens if we do nick a vessel when injecting? Any idea?

Thank you for responding. I've been a wreck all day since this but, she is just ready to tear me to shreds if I try to test her again right now and she's eaten more since anyways, seemingly coming down off of the catnip "high" and feast she had through the night. Little brat! ;) (said lovingly) :)

I would imagine if you truely injected IV (it's probably hard to do, compared to IM or just nicking a vessel) he might be at risk for a steep curve and hypo because you are bypassing the time release function of the insulin. If you just nick some capillaries there will just be a bruise later and it's not a bit deal.

If this happens a lot you might want to find the ultrafine short needles, BD makes nice ones.

Thank you, Meya....that's my thinking too. I tented so, I highly doubt that I got anywhere near a vein. It's more likely that I either "scratched" her skin or, I nicked a vessel/capillary.

Of course, the panic that sets in when you're not sure of what happened and it's never happened before....well....that sets the mind off into all sorts of "bad" scenarios as imaginations run wild and fancy free.

And, the injector needles that are used with the pens are tiny, as fine and short as the BD...but, thank you for that as I may end up having to go to the syringes since the pens only go in whole units.

Thank you so much! :)

Thank you @Stacym20
That reassures me that I'm not overlooking anything in terms of not being able to pull back on a syringe. I consider myself lucky if I get a test and the shot in. :)

Upon looking at the link that you so kindly provided, I realized that I AM already doing the roll method just by instinct with her long fur. :) While I called it "tenting" I realize that I AM doing the "roll method" already! :) That also makes me feel better. I just found that way easier to see as well and do.

Thank you! :)
