All is well in BigMac land. His visit to the vet resulted in a healthy report but he does need his teeth cleaned.

In preparation for this, since he is a Maine Coon, we are having his heart checked very carefully. EKG, chest films, and tomorrow an Ultrasound. If he passes everything with no problems, then we schedule the dental.

Here he is at the vet's trying to hide. His eyes say he wants to go HOME. He was gentle but very scared.

Re: BigMac checking-in

oh big mac you handsome man! Yay on the good vet results .. will be sending positive thoughts for his heart to check out good so he can have a dental .. Our boy cheddar (maine coon) passed away at just over a year, from his heart condition (unknown to us) I'm glad the extra precautions are being taken ...

Re: BigMac checking-in

Sending good vibes your way for a successful dental. If he is anything like me - hate dental exams.

Re: BigMac checking-in

Very cute condo
I hope all tests come back normal and his dental goes just fine. ;-)

Re: BigMac checking-in

BigMac looks just like my civie, Doobie! A very handsome guy, I must say! I hope all tests come back good and the dental goes well.

Re: BigMac checking-in

Awww that pic melted my heart. Thank you for posting about hearts and maine coons and for checking his out before the procedure.

Re: BigMac checking-in

Big Mac, you are one handsome dude! Good luck with your tests tomorrow. When you pass, you get to have a dental. How great is that?!

(don't be scared),

Re: BigMac checking-in

Yes, Devon and Karrie... The heart issue is very important for this breed. I lost my first kitty the same way as Devon. She was only 18 months and died suddenly of a clot thrown from her damaged heart. The suddenness was similar to Karrie's Maverick also. So I did ask the vet to do every possible test before we proceeded. My vet was completely on board with the extra testing since she has Maine Coon kitties too. :-D

Celi! Hahahahaha! Too true! BigMac jumped at every sound as the vets and techs walked past his exam room. (The 'back' door is open to the test and lab area.)

Thank you Gracie for the big hugs... BigMac is smiling in his sleep now.

Linda, there is no doubt that Doobie is a handsome dude if he and BigMac look alike. Heh, heh!

Thanks everyone for the good wishes for passing his tests. I bet he'd like to fail them so he could opt out of the dental. That's not an option, sorry big guy.

Re: BigMac checking-in

Hi guys - so so glad passed his vetty visit. bummer on the dental, but I am sure all will be well there too. Loved the photo!!!

Big Mac - no worries!! If I can do it, you can too - piece of cake!! ~~ Mannie

Re: BigMac checking-in

aw, big mac looks gorgeous! i'm even getting his "get me out of here vibes!" wish we could rescue you from the dental, big mac, but it's good for ya!

i didn't know that about Maine Coons - the 4th year vet student that saw punkin at CSU said that punkin was a maine coon. i'd never heard that before - i need to learn more about them.

we've been missing you, cd!!! good to see you today!

Re: BigMac checking-in

Good luck with the tests and then the dental. You are so brave BigMac! Show all the other kitties how easy it is.

Have a wonderful day Carolyn!

Re: BigMac checking-in

Well BigMac had his ultra sound this morning. They were only going to do chest films if the ultra sound indicated anything unusual. That sounds backwards but it isn't. If the Ultra sound showed thickening of the heart ventricle then they wanted to see how enlarged the heart might be by taking the x-rays.

I was getting a little worried since the ultra sound was taking a long time. I was there watching and helping hold BigMac. His heart was racing and several times the vet tried to coax him to 'slow down'. But even for a scared kitty, the vet said his rate was too extreme. His left ventricle is thickened and they did chest films to see if the heart was enlarging in the typical "Valentine" shape. It is, but not dramatically at this point. So he does have HCM (Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.)

It is not too far advanced as of today so after some discussion between BigMac's main vet and the heart specialist, they said he was ok to get his dental done. They want it done now since he seems to have one bad tooth that may need to be pulled. There may be a time in the near future that it would be too risky to put him under anesthesia. Getting it done now will help him avoid having a painful tooth and no way to get it out.

We scheduled it next Friday so the surgeon can do the dental and the heart doc will be there as well, if needed.

Meanwhile, BigMac and I are doing the same things as we always do. He doesn't know he has a heart problem.... :-D and I love his big heart. ♡♡♡

this isn't the news we wanted to hear...
but your comment is SO CD & BigMac!!!

love and hugs from Binks & Me, Carolyn

(((CD))) i know this is worrisome, but i'm so glad you had BigMac checked out before the dental. knowledge is power and this knowledge will go a long way in keeping him safe.
big hugs being sent your way...

Hey CD

Sorry to hear about BigMac's new dx. Yuck, Yuck, Yuck.

But as you said, he doesn't know. I'm glad you got this done and will get that bad toofer fixed.

I do luv that pic you snagged of him at the vetty. poor dear....looks awfully scared.

Hugs,
tena and curry

Hi Carolyn,
Not the great news you wanted to get, but not terrible either. Just another thing to keep watching. Anyway, it's good that Big Mac can have the dental. It's also good for those of us who have Maine Coon cats (or mix, in Rusty's case) to know of this genetic problem. More food for thought! We'll be thinking of Big Mac next week. And we love his big heart, too!

Hugs to you both,

Ella & Rusty

I'm so sorry for the heart issue. All of us with Maine Coons know how very big their hearts are and worry that it will be a problem. They are truly a special breed. All that love and warmth just shines through. Know that I am thinking about you and sending all the love and healing vines I can find. ((((Carolyn)))). ((((Big Mac)))). You are so right that Big Mac doesn't know and is the same sweet guy he was this morning. Give him an extra hug and kiss from me!

You were so wise to ask to have everything worked up before going ahead with a dental. Like Jill said, knowledge is power. I know you have confidence in your vet and it certainly sounds like she is being cautious and making sure that the expertise is in the building should it be needed.

It sounds like you have a vet that is very aware, and that is great. You didn't get ideal news today, but you and your vet are on top of things, adn BigMac is one lucky kitty!

So glad you had him totally checked over so you could be sure what is what--
Gotta give both vets credit for being conscientous!!
I feel like CD is in good hands, has the best mom bean ever, and All of us to love & send good health vines to him... Love CD's Big Heart too and yours as well!! Hugs & Love from us!!!!!!!
Prayers begin NOW!

Wow, I'm sorry for the not-so-great news, but at least you know! That's so important so you can do the right things now and in the future. Good luck with the dental!!

Knowledge is power, but it isn't always fun. BigMac will keep being BigMac and mama bean will keep loving her big hearted boy, as we all will. Hugs to you both.

awww, I know you were really hoping for different news. I agree that getting the dental done sooner rather than later sounds like a good plan. I'm glad you had him checked out, though, so they can take extra precautions. My little Mickey has HCM too. He had a dental last year and everything was fine. I know BigMac will be fine too.

Yes, I've learned A LOT from you guys! I know to ask more questions and to be more proactive.

Thank you for this...(((Libby))) it makes me feel better about his dental.

The new vet practice I'm going to is very thorough and careful. And super friendly. The vet carried BigMac around the office showing everyone his big feet. It was funny.

I am sorry to hear he has this but sounds like you have super vets Do Lou has a enlarged heart that was discovered by accident actually during a abdomen xray when he was 3 and has bee on enalapril every since and has heart xrays every year my vet also wants a ultrasound done this next year sending you both lots of ((((hugs)))) sounds like he will be in good hands next week for his dental

Hey CD -sorry for the news. It is good though that they were as thorough as they were, and that you have caught things early. I have been there with a civvie long ago, and he did just fine, I now BigMac will too. Hugs to all!

Aahhhh CD!! Durn it!! I'm sorry to hear about the HCM. However, as you know, many, many cats can be stable a very long time and live a long, healthy life. A friend of mine's kitty has it...dxd at 6 and at 14, she's still plugging right along nice and stable.

There is a GREAT yahoo HCM group. We were on it a long time as the radiologist here thought GA Max had HCM but once we got to see a cardiologist, he actually didn't have it. There are some really smart people that can help with ideas on how to keep things as they are for as long as possible.

And we all love his big heart!!!

one of the great things about this place is others have experience to share when you are facing it - look how many kitters have had enlarged hearts as well! so glad you have a good vet and all the tests done so it can be approached safely. many hugs.

So sorry to hear this dx, but as all the others have said it is better to know sooner and be able to deal with it effectively. It sounds like Big Mac is in very capable and caring hand! We will keep you in our thoughts for the dental!

CD, you are the best kitty mom! I'm sorry you didn't get all the results you wanted, but he is in such good hands all around.

When we take Kitty to vet, we let him go back into his carrier while we talk. He promptly shows his displeasure by turning his back and showing us his behind. BigMac was much more polite.

So vet showed everyone BigMac's big feet? WE would enjoy a picture of his feet! Just sayin'.

I had no idea this was a concern for this breed. You are one smart cookie and Big Mac is one lucky guy to have you looking out for him.

Good luck with the dental. I know it will be fine and he will come through it with one less toofy and be just fine.

So I guess it means that you will now start (or continue) brushing his teefies! Oh boy Big Mac, something fun for you to do.

(((CD and BigMac))) Thinking of you and so sorry about the news, but you sure were wise to get the ultrasound. Sounds like they will really take precautions with the dental, too. Hugs.

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: CD and Big Mac :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
I am so impressed with your pro activeness! Big Mac is so lucky to have you!!! It also sounds like you have a wonderful vet working WITH you. That is so important.

I hope others have tamed your nerves a bit regarding the dental and that he will get through it with a dazzling new smile to show all his LL friends.

What a handsome big boy… Big Mac good luck at the <<dentist>> next week…

Sorry about the hearth issue, I didn’t know about Maine Coon’s hearth concerns.

We’ll be thinking about you next week… :YMHUG:
