Big drop - normal?

Hi folks,
I took Jones off dry last Friday (had been on half wet/half dry vet's Rx food). He's been riding at about 100 points less than normal since then which is great. Last night I started switching over his wet brand too. I did 3/4 can of the WD, and 1/8 of a can of Friskies chicken pate. today's numbers were in the high 200's, but PS tonight he was 84! We've had big spikes, but is a drop this big normal too? His numbers were so high I didn't think we had much to worry about with these very gradual food changes. I'll be checking him diligently while we keep food transitionng, but if his numbers keep getting low, at which point should I change his dose? We have a hypo kit ready, but it's just scary to think that it can come when you least expect it!

Hi there, and yes, a food change to much lower carbs can reduce the blood glucose as much as 100 points. Good thing you are home testing and will be monitoring. It will be important for you to get a+2- 2.5 to make sure see what the dose does in case you need to steer with some food. I know how you feel; you want them in lower numbers and when it happens you get scared. If you get into trouble (low hypo number) post in Health and someone should be able to help guide you.

Hello. What insulin are you using? When you get a chance, can you set up your "signature" with additional information? Just click on "Netty" on the top right of your screen and click on signature. The rest should be pretty easy to figure out. It would be very helpful. Thanks.

Hey Netty, I just should have looked at you SS to see that you were using the Alpha Trak. 84 is starting to go into the "be concerned" area for a new diabetic. Please get a test as soon as you read this since you posted about 42 minutes ago and see where he is and then please post.

he's at 109 now, but sometimes he goes up before he goes down. I'll continue testing him every hour.

He's at 165 at +2. Gave him a couple "junk food" treats at +1.

Save the "junk food" for the Trick or Treaters....LOL

Looks like he may be starting to bounce from the lower number today so don't be surprised if he continues up tonight. Bounces can last for up to 6 cycles so it's important not to react to high "bounce" numbers and increase the dose
