Big Appetite

Ozzy has surely regained his appetite and has been eating his food regularly now (vs not eating well) for about 2 weeks now. The last 2 days or so though- he seems to be eating more food and is hungrier.

Yesterday he woke me up at 4am hungry loving and I didnt get up until 6:30 and he had vomited. This am I had woken up on my own at 4 a.m. and both my kitties were up and ran to the kitchen for food so this time I have them both about a tablespoon each and went back to bed.
I am testing Ozzy's ketones and both yesterday and today they were negative.
I am not sure what is going on- maybe my kitties are just obsessed with FF classics or something. They have eaten other FF types in past- but they both really love the classics. Even my 13 yr old forever skinny kitty is eating way more food than he ever has and I think he has gained a little weight in the last 2 weeks since the food switch- but he could afford to do so.

Yesterday Ozzy ate around 9 oz- he is suppossed to be around 8.25. I actually want him to lose a little more weight. He has about 1-1.5 lbs more to get to the ideal weight for his frame. He used to be 18-19lbs before the DKA.

How do I deal with both my kitties increased appetites!?

You can take the amount you feed in a day and spread it out in smaller feedings. That way they won't be so ravenous at one meal. When glucose is high and to low, kitties are hungrier because their body is pulling the engery/nutrients from what is stored.

ok- good advice. Thank you. I am looking into buying one of those automatic feeders so I can give them a little more food during the day and in the middle of the night when I am not able to feed them again. Any ideas how to deal with two kitties who have competitive eating issues? They will both want the extra food when the container pops open but I am going to assume Ozzy will want more and will try to eat more of it. It is definately challenging having two cats with different appetites and different sizes/food requirements. And they get jealous of eachother and are always stealing eachothers food.

BTW- want to mention that we do have a longer term goal of having Ozzy lose some more weight to get at a more ideal size for his frame- but not right away. We still haven't totally figured out his insulin requirements yet so right now we are monitoring him and going low and slow as suggested. When things start to get more normal- we will look at those options.

There is a feeder where a micro chip is put on the kitties collar so it will only open for that cat when it's near the dish. It would mean having one feeder for each cat though.

Wow! What is the name of the automatic feeder that works with the micro chip in the kitties collar? That sounds right up my alley for my two competitive eaters!

Ya- exactly! Way more expensive than I thought. Looks like it only holds one meal instead of several like some of the other feeders. Not sure how this works with 2 cats. Also- seems you have to have your cat chipped and we are not going to do that. They are both indoor only kitties.

I think the chip is a tag you put on a collar.

Don't faint over the price!!!!!!
Too late ...

Paula, does the lid close automatically if the microchipped kitty moves away from the sensor area?
