BGS are elevated - updated he has pacreatitis

Cedric has been OTJ for about 14-15 months and I currently test him each month. Today, he woke me up early this morning when I he hacked (but did not vomit) in bed. We got up at 5:30 and I tested his Bg before I fed them. It took me about 10 minutes get get some blood out of him (he has never been easy). I had to heat my pad up twice (the part he really hates) and went thru 2 test strips. The reading was 194. :shock:

I am hoping that this is just a result of agitation. he used to be high 60s to low 70s. Then when Dallas came to live with us, his BGs would be higher at times - I think because Cedric has a tendancy of eating more food than is actually allotted to him. I will update the spread sheet with the latest number, but what are your thoughts about the test? I am going to help MustLoveCats to pack today (she is moving to Jacksonville - anyone know a good vet there?) but will be back this afternoon and will try to test him again before going to bed at 8pm tonight (working 5am shift tomorrow).

My only thought is get a few more random tests right away.

All cats react differently .
I haven't done a before visiting vet bg vs. at the vet vs an hour after going back home but I would expect my cat would have
a jump for the traveling/vet office.
Her hair starts falling out immediately when we have to go out there so I'm sure her bg spikes in a big way.


If you were losing ground , you would want to get that insulin started again quickly to keep Cedric from going full board FD again.
And then also, are there any other flags of a health problem. teeth always have a negative effect right away. ..

Stress of any kind can easily effect BG numbers. I would retest about 3 hrs after you feed Cedric and see if his numbers come back down. If his numbers stay up, I would consider a vet visit to make sure there's not a medical or dental problem that's effecting his numbers.

He had a dental April 30, so it better not be his darn teeth. I am always trying to brush his teeth but the one thing on the PLANET he won't chew is the toothbrush. but he'll chew everything else!

Just got home from helping MustLoveCats to pack for her big move. she said she is useing the relion 33 gague lancets and havinga decent time getting blood from Sebastian, her black long haired (currently sporting a lion cut) FD. I used a 28 gague this am, so I might try one of the high gague lancets later before I feed him dinner. I might also go back to the floor, i put him up on the counter today.

Just retested and he came up at 140 (again using the Relion Micro). He has eaten some snack within the past 30 minutes. Dinner will be early tonight because I have to go to bed early (working the 5am shift tomorrow). i will have more time later in the day to retest him tomorrow. I did have a little better time with the One Touch lancets which are 33 gague.

Stress makes my Kate's number go thru the roof! I would also say, check into why he's stressing. Is he in pain? Something bothering him? Skin/tummy/UT irritation or inflammation?

I have been updating my spreadsheet, but here are the numbers I have been taking this week:

8/18 5:45am b4 food 194
8/18 4:15pm ate a small snack about 45 minutes b4 140
8/19 no blood just a frustrated cat...
8/20 5:35am 132 b4 food
8/22 6:05am 147 b4 food
8/22 5:30pm 156 about 1.5hr after small snack
8/23 6am 153 b4 meal
8/23 +3.5, agitated as 1st strip errored and his reading was 96!

We are scheduled for a vet trip later today (he is at the office with me). He spoke to cjleo on Sunday night and said that he had an upset tummy but it was getting better. His bm has been intermittant. she was afraid that there might be an infection spiking his numbers, so to the vet he goes...
What are your thoughts?

I am so sorry to hear he has pancreatitis. My Siamese mix got really sick with it years ago, vomiting everything up and had to be hospitalized for days, she almost died. She was very sick. I think some cats get sicker than others with it but I will let the others comment that have had more experience with it. I do know it is painful for them so pain meds might be in order. Please keep us updated.

Be sure he gets pain meds. His case may be mild since he is still eating everything in sight. Rusty (LL board) had a mild case. You might want to talk with Ella about Rusty's progress with pancreatitis.

updated he has pancreatitis

The blood test from last Friday did not show marked improvement. Yesterday i picked up a new prescription for him at the pharmacy: Ursodiol. He will take 1/2 of a 250mg tablet each day. He is almost done with the Pancrezyme (twice a day) and about half way thru the Denamarin (once a day). While he has had no vomiting (last night we were on the couch and I thought one was coming) I think he might be eating a little less than normal.
 
fwiw, my foster kitty was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis and we're pretty much on the same treatment as you. mind you he has had no clinical symptoms of it but the vet thought we should test him when we had him in for regular bloodwork since it coincides with diabetes so much.

she put him on denamarin every day, cerenia every other day, a weekly b12 injection, and bupe & fluids as needed. thankfully he hasn't needed the bupe & fluids yet **anti-jinx**. she did that for 4 weeks then had us back in to recheck his numbers and his have improved quite a bit, not quite normal yet but good improvement.

i hope with this supportive care he never has a big flare up but with the knowledge i've seen here over the years about it i feel ok with the diagnosis.

He got his steriod shot alomost 2 weeks ago and he got the pain med shot that same day - I htought it was called cerina but I am at the office right now and invoices are at home. At least both of them are now on wellness plans so I am spared some of the visit costs - I now get charged for the testing and meds but not for the office visit. ~sigh~

I am having cjleo talk to him tonight to see how he feels and if he is in pain. He played with Dallas a little bit last night but not much. The fun part will be taking both of them in tomorrow (Dallas goes for his annual check up). Cjleo will ask Cedric why he gets so grumpy at the vet's office. Dallas hates the ride (he gets car sick/dizzy) but is a good boy when he is there. Last time the vet gave him a nice kiss on the head.

Ella gave me a link to a yahoo group and I have been looking for the yahoo email I had years ago to try to gain access to the group. I am extra nervous since Cedric is OTJ. He needs to be tested again, perhaps tonight between all his pills! :lol:
