Good Morning everyone,
So sad to see some kitty's moving on. I feel really lucky ours has responded so well to just a diet change. Thank you so much for being here as I would have struggled with whether to go by the vet's W/D choice and been so upset as I don't like the Hill's brand as it is but it can be so hard "going against" vet's instructions/guidance.

Anyway. I'm still working on converting Shadow to a non-fish based canned food, going to do it more slowly by adding more and more of the Wellness chicken grain free to his chicken and herring... hopefully adding less and less chkn and herring and more and more chicken will work... *crossing fingers*. He is doing great with me adding water to the canned too so that's a relief as far as helping him poop... again, thanks to this board for that suggestion/tip!

So, this a.m. I tested his glucose at 5:40a.m. and it was 127. SO, if his numbers stay like this (below 200) he won't need insulin at all will he? I feel like I'm holding my breath b/c it never seems to be a situation with our animals that the "easy" road is the successful one! I guess it's not that easy since his food tastes are picky ;-)

The numbers we use for a kitty off insulin in remission are from 40 -120. The 120 is the high end of the spectrum and we are assuming they are not consistently there for the majority of the day. So you are really close.

What I would suggest is small frequent meals, perhaps on the lower end of the carb scale and testing so you can see a range of numbers over the day. Sometimes, when people do the lower carb and support the pancreas with frequent meals, the kitty gradually goes down in numbers, over a week or more. If I were you, that would be my plan for the moment.

If in a week or so, you are seeing double digits numbers pretty consistenly, you can think OTJ. If he is still running consistently 120 or higher, you may have to consider a tiny bit of insulin.

Either way,he is doing great!

Thanks Sue, that sounds like a great plan that I'll follow and see how his numbers are in the a.m. thru-out the week. Now to convince him that he really wants to eat more varieties of flavor then wellness ckn and herring. :)
