BG Numbers Getting Low.. Not Sure Why

I know, I should be excited about this. But instead I am baffled and worried.

Many of you have seen my posts about Todd. It's a long, LOOONG story. In short, he's 16ish years old, on 2.0 units of Lantus twice a day. He has kidney issues.. I hate to call it kidney failure, but I suppose that is what it is. He eats k/d dry (he really won't do the canned food. Sometimes I can get him to take a few licks) He gets 100 to 150ml of Sub-Q daily, as well as Tumil-K supplements, weekly B12 shots and the occasional Pepcid or Mirtazapine (hasn't needed the Mirtazapine for about a month). His last vet visit was.. Gosh, either Dec or early Jan. I don't recall. The vet said he was doing ok, and to just keep doing what we're doing. For weeks now he has been doing great! He even gained 8 ounces back! (he's down to 9.8lbs from his original 16lbs).

If you look at his SS, you'll see at shot time, he was usually 250+. But the last couple of days, he's been getting low.. and I don't know why. he's not showing any signs that he is having any issues when he is low. he acts totally normal. But I am very worried about this. As I said, I should be happy. But this seems to be very random.

I haven't noticed anything off aside from possibly drinking a bit more water than usual (but with the diabetes and kidney issues, he's gonna drink a TON anyway). It's possible he is eating a bit less than usual, and that could be the cause of the lower numbers. I just don't know.

I did just check for ketones this evening and it is negative.

Anywho.. just curious if anyone has some thoughts on this. He's due for a curve for sure, but I don't know if doing that this week will give me the correct numbers or just false numbers because something else is going on with him...

Thanks!
Sarah

If he's eating less and getting about the same amount of insulin that could be making his numbers drop. At least you're not getting any scary-low numbers. I have no experience with the other issues your kitty has though, hopefully someone with more knowledge will respond soon.

The lowest he has gone to so far is 62. But I haven't been able to check more than a couple of times a day. So who knows.. he could be dropping into the 40's and I don't know it.

Things that cause Blood sugar to go down:

insulin (injected AND natural - maybe pancreas is kicking in)
exercise
less food
fluids
cancer (eats sugar to grow)

Things that cause Blood sugar to do up:

illness / infection / bad teeth
stress
food - especially high carb
